You could try using a metallic black thread (I've found some by Artiste at Hobby Lobby). That way it would still be black, but would provide a subtle difference while still maintaining the color scheme. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Depending on the design of the chart, if possible, you could just start stitching where you left off on another piece of aida (or whatever you're using) and break the design up into segments (not sure how to explain this). Like, if you took a square photo and cut it into 4 smaller squares, you could...
