Re: New November Bingo: INSECTS! 11th numbers posted

We do have a bingo! Congratulations to hularac / Carol from Honolulu! :balloons: I want to thank you all again--I really enjoy hosting bingo games here, and it was great fun trying to make insects more appealing. I hope I didn't creep too many of you out or bore you with things I think are interesti...

Re: New November Bingo: INSECTS! 10th numbers posted

Today there are 3 picks since I've missed a couple of days this week. I know some of you are getting kind of close.... so here they are: 3. Ephemeroptera 6. Isoptera 24. Diptera Ephemeroptera, the mayflies. This order of insects is thought to be the oldest group of flying insects. There are about 2,...

Apologies for missing another day-I literally lost track of time while studying (which rarely happens, because who doesn't want a break from that?). Today's picks are: 15. Zoraptera 29. Hymenoptera Zoraptera, the zorapterans. This is a *really* small order that contains only 39 living species. The g...

Today's picks are: 16. Phthiraptera 21. Raphidioptera Phthiraptera-the louse (makes me itchy just saying it) Lice are very well known to humans because of the stigma attached to them, but interestingly they're merely an annoyance and very rarely cause their hosts lasting harm (if any harm at all). T...

Re: New November Bingo: INSECTS! 7th numbers posted

@maemae actually, the doodlebug is the ant lion larva. The larvae kind of twist and corkscrew their way into sand when they form the funnel-shaped traps they catch their prey in. If you ever pick on up, it does the same thing in your hand as it tries to burrow. @Carole yes, scarabs are in the beetle...

I forgot in my last post to comment on that atlas moth...absolutely beautiful! I'd love to get my hands on a few to give my niece, who is a budding insect lover. My apologies for the (very) late posting. Today's picks are: 22. Coleoptera 23. Strepsiptera Coleoptera: the beetles! Beetles populate the...

Today's picks are: 8. Mantodea 12. Embiidina Mantodea: the mantids (praying mantis) The mantids consist of about 2,400 species. They are one of my favorite groups due simply to their charisma (despite being gruesome and very effective predators). Whenever I can get them, I have them in my house to h...

OK! Today's picks are: 1. Archaeognatha 14. Dermaptera 28. Lepidoptera Archaeognatha, the jumping bristletails This order of insects is considered the most basal; they are wingless and most closely resemble the common ancestor of all insects. They are among the least-studied of insect orders, with o...

I'm stuck on campus helping with an 'emergency bake sale rescue' (the bird club I'm in is raising money for a couple of great educational trips, and they didn't make near enough baked goods). I will post a set of 3 numbers tomorrow. I apologize for the missed day! @maemae yes, some are predatory and...

Re: New November Bingo: INSECTS! Fourth numbers posted

Carole, I wish my original post on Blattodea had gone through... I attempted to make cockroaches a little less persecuted and a little more appealing (those that aren't pests, that is). However, I think the dragon/damselflies were a much greater success anyway, just about everyone has used a descrip...

That came out fantastic...I think I'll dust off PCStitch and get cracking! :)

After Christmas though, I have to finish another project first... o.O

I was thinking I'd work out the background and stitch the dragonfly on black.

Haha hularac!! Just got home, so it will be late tonight or tomorrow morning for the next picks. I'm a very lucky person in that fleas and mosquitoes don't like me/my blood very much. It's only been this way since I had my son at 22, before that I was a typical victim. I've always eaten more than my...

Apparently, the internet ate my post from last night! I've been having spotty internet issues since last night, and no internet at home this morning at all. I'm on campus right now, so I'll make a brief post with last night's numbers and images. I apologize for the confusion! The picks were: 7. Blat...

I didn't even know there was a movie out already! I've read all the books as well, Ender's Game of course being a favorite. I also liked the one about his friend that grew up on the streets (can't remember the name right now) quite a lot.

Yes! That's what I was thinking, too...the Mos Eisley cantina in Star Wars! (Knowing the name has truly pegged me as a sci-fi nerd, I'm sure). Also, the assassin bugs that paste corpses to themselves made me think of the Reavers in Firefly. Hopefully the creepers that you picked will get picked soon...

Re: New November Bingo: INSECTS! LAST DAY to sign up!

Welcome to Insect Bingo! We have a small group this time around, but it could be the subject matter. :) If I ever get to host another bingo, I'll to something more cuddly! Some basic facts about insects to get us started: There are around 1,000,000 described or 'known' species, but it's estimated th...
