Alphabet I can use in designs for sale

Post by coachellacanuck »

I have a project I am working on - a collection of sayings by women, one per chart - and each pattern consists of one stitched large letter using multiple colours preceding the rest of the saying in Arial black. I wish to make these charts available for sale when I am done, but the pattern maker software I am using cautions that the stitched fonts are copyrighted and cannot be used in making patterns for sale.

So, I am thinking I have three choices concerning the stitched font:

1) Design my own stitched font
2) Find a stitched font I like that is copyright free
3) Have a stitched font designed for me

Any suggestions? Ideas? Thanks for any assistance you can lend.

My suggestion would be to play around on your pattern maker and make an alphabet by yourself. Of course your alphabet isn't going to look much different from another alphabet depending on how small the lettering is, but try and make them stand out a bit from other alphabets. Also a lot of the parts of your made up alphabet can be used in other letters of your alphabet. The "l" is the same portion of the "b" without the curve and the "o" is from the curved section of the "b"...by doing that you create a coherent alphabet that flows perfectly together.

I have a few different alphabets that I have designed and have them saved into my program so when I type words they automatically chart themselves and I know they are my alphabets :)

Thanks for this. I think the Arial for the text is commonplace and copyright free. But the more ornate and detailed stitched font I am using for the single, large letter that begins the phrase is the one that concerns me. So I have to wonder, how much do I have to change it to make it "my own design"?

Any one with experience or thoughts on this?

If you are using a program to chart your design, like MacStitch or WinStitch, some alphabets are included. These must be copyright free for obvious reasons. There are also alphabet charts that have fallen out of copyright: thinking Th. de Dillmont embroidery albums published in the 1920s by DMC and freely available online at places like the Antique Pattern Library.
