Silk Floss - Where to buy?

Post by Brekkana »

Hello everyone :) I am contemplating buying silk threads for a HAED chart that recommends it, but am unsure where to look for silk thread versus regular DMC cotton thread. I did try searching but not really sure what I am to look for.
So many HAEDs I couldn't possibly list them all. Current favorites are Dragon Kin, Sea Unicorns (QS), April Fairy, What's This, Dahlia, and so many starts going on. Love to cross stitch! Find me on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/brekkana.kultiras

Depends what you are after and where you live in the world :). If it's a specific silk brand like Dinky Dyes, Caron, Gloriana etc, then if you live in Europe you'll find them either at http://www.sewandso.co.uk/Threads" target="_blank" target="_blank (UK) or http://www.casacenina.com/embroidery/threads.html" target="_blank" target="_blank (EU) or if you are US/Canada (and even Australia/NZ) then http://www.123stitch.com/Thread_and_Floss.html" target="_blank" target="_blank will be your best bet. There are lots of indie silk dyers too - just depends what you are looking for. The only silks that I can remember seeing related to HAED are Dinky Dyes (readily available everywhere) and Hand Dyed Fibers or HDFs which are no longer available to purchase as Vikki Clayton the dyer behind them has changed the direction of her business to yarn dying. Hope that helps :).

Toulouse Cat

This is one they recommend using silks but the website they reference cannot be displayed.

I will take a look see on the sites you offered and see if I can find what I would need :)

(Not planning to start anytime soon, just needing to see if pricewise it is even feasible).

Thank you!!

I though it might be HDF silks they recommended, as I said you won't be able to find those silks anywhere as Vikki is taking a break from silk dyeing and if you could access her site (the only place you could buy them), you would see that all the silk colours have been taken down. She might make a return to silk dyeing, no one is quite sure yet! You could stitch the chart in another brand of silk, but would have to do your own conversion. I've stitched a HAED in silk, but it was a black and white chart so only 15 colours required - a full colour chart would cost a small fortune in silks!

A piece I'm currently working on called for HDF, and it took ages for me to realise they were no longer available. :( Goes to show you need to kit up the piece when you get the design... or something.

Perhaps the designer can make some recommendations, since HDF are no longer available. There is a conversion for some of the colours to DMC here: http://www.hand-dyedfibers.com/download/DMC.HDF.pdf" target="_blank" target="_blank It's clear that perhaps combining strands in the needle might be helpful to give depth of colour. Good luck!
