Thanks so much for your replies. I'm heading to the fabric store tomorrow so I can get them done in time to use this Christmas. Wish me luck!

Hi Katie, I'm a real novice trying to turn my first cross-stitch stocking into a stocking now. This is my 1st time on this site and I'm trying to figure out how to put it all together now. You tutorial looks like it could really help me and you suggest clicking on the pics to make them bigger. I would like to do this but every time I click on them, it closes your tutorial and a message says: The Gallery will be unlocked after you have posted 10 more messages. Any ideas?

I'm so happy to find this tutorial! My grandmother made me a cross stitched stocking when I was young and I always said I'd make them for my family someday. Well, someday is here now and I'm a married mother of 2 boys. I just finished stitching stockings for my husband and oldest son but there were no instructions included for finishing the stocking. Thanks for you clear instructions! :D

Thanks for this
I found this tutorial through Google and have joined your forum because of it.
I have never cross stitched a stocking, but next year my first son will be moving away and I want to make one for him for next year. Can I ask what fabric you use to stitch on? Is it aida or do you recommend something else? Also what gauge?

Thanks so much
Dragica

Hi Dragica,

I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful! Both the stockings I've made have been on 14 count white Aida fabric. It's very durable and has a good weight to it. I use cotton fabric for the lining and have done both backings with red felt. You don't have to stick to cotton and felt, but they are cheery and easy to work with. I make quilts as well, and I try to stay away from mixing fabrics with very different amounts of stretch. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Can you please elaborate on step 7 with the basting? I don't understand what exact pieces you are basting and why. Also you mention removing blue thread, what blue thread? Sorry I can't open the pictures to make them bigger unless I post here at least 10 times :( these are the best instructions I've seen for this yet! I was also hoping to add batting between the lining layers, how could I do this?

Thank you!

I think I can help with this one.

The blue thread is in step 1. If your design has unstitched areas, it helps to put in basting to create the outline of the stocking. This gives you a place to measure from when marking the line you will later cut along. In the tutorial, she used blue thread for creating this outline along the bottom of her project.

In step 7, you are basting through the two layers that make up the front of your stocking--the Aida (or other fabric) with your stitching and the lining you are using for the inside. One reason for this is that it keeps the two layers from slipping when you sew the stocking front to the back. The other reason is that once you put the front and back pieces together to do the seam around the edge, you will no longer be able to see the design. The design pointed inside, facing the right (outside) of the stocking back. If you have basted around the outline of the design, you can follow the basting lines while you sew the seam. This will also keep you from accidentally having a gap with unstitched fabric showing between the edge of you design and where the seam actually starts.

Hopefully someone else will weigh in about the batting. I've made a few stockings, but haven't used the batting. I'd imagine it would go between the outer layer and the lining layer, but I'd be afraid it would make the seam too bulky when you turned it right side out.

I hope this helps, and if it's not making sense, let me know. Sometimes things make sense in my head, but not so much once they land in the real world. :D

Thank you for the clear instructions. I have been putting off the task of putting it together, not quite sure how to do it. The assembly instructions for the crossstitch kit did not include how to line it, so I appreciated learning how to do this. :D
