Mine aren't "organised" in a time saving way. I usually work from kits, and I bag up individual colours into small resealable plastic bags, label them, and throw them in a box, in no particular order. It doesn't save time, but I thoroughly enjoy sifting through the pretty colours whenever I need to change threads. One thing I love about cross stitch is being able to change colours so easily, so searching through a box of wonderful colours is not a chore to me.

I keep them all in a ball of neurosis, entangled and entwined so that any attempt to get a strand of a particular color longer than two centimeters (that's like.. I dunno, two hundred yards or three quarters of a few hundred pounds for you Americans ;p) is impossibly impossible and immediately makes me consider intracranial arson, drinking lye, stopping a speeding truck with my fist and other such ambitious endeavours of great virtue and of sound and proper judgment.

My method may or may not enrich your life.

I should go to bed. It's 7:43 ante meridiem here in Sweden. But you know what they say, right? Because I don't. Enough of my highly intellectual drivel, I'm gonna go tune my carpet in F sharp or attempt to take care of something that lives. They say that I shouldn't. But what do they know? Who are they anyway? Damn yarn... It's going to drive me crazy one of these days... Did you know that yarn tangles and that brain tangles are prevalent in people with Alzheimers? Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

Well, I'm off, I'd tip my hat for you but it creases and foils easily.

I've been going crazy looking for the right system. I've been using the plastic bobbins on rings, but there was always floss coming loose and tangling with other colors. Then I tried a storage box, but found that to be too clumsy, what with one bobbin pushing two other up and over itself, etc. THEN I got the three-ring binder sleeves, thinking it would be the answer. Nope, the buggers come right out of their pockets every time I flip a page.

Finally, just now, I ordered the DMC U1633, which hangs up on a wall and stores all the bobbins in pockets. It'll be delivered on Tuesday, so stay tuned!

Give us a report! :)

I gave up on bobbins and went to Floss-A-Way bags for my main stash and for my WiP 'kit.' All that winding was a waste of effort for me, especially when my projects can (and usually do) take multiple skeins of the different colors. With the bags, I can buy several skeins of a color and just stick them in a bag together. The bags hold full skeins, partial skeins and stray bits still suitable for use. I have my main stash in numerical order on four big rings and I have one ring for my current project.

But as with all things in this hobby, one person's ideal solution is another person's nightmare, so give us a report on your organizer once you sort it out. :)

I'm also curious to see how you like it. I like the idea, and it will be so pretty with all the different colors in there. If I got something like that, I'd definitely have to hang it inside the closet - I can just imagine Jackson trying to get the bobbins out - and succeeding.

I got the DMC U1633 in the mail today. Amazon has them for $21, and they're prime, so free shipping if you subscribe to that. So far I really like it! It's really well-made with double-stitching all around. You may want to avoid putting floss bobbins in the top row, as it can be a little cumbersome getting them past the hanger flap, but even that isn't much of a problem. My current project has 82 different colors, and they fit in there perfectly:

Therefore, it's nowhere near enough to hold ALL your colors, but it works for me if you use it one project at a time.

As project storage, is it handy enough? It looks like you'd have to get up from the chair to reach many of the bobbins, and so you'd have to get up for many of the every color changes. If you hung it lower, you'd have to reach down pretty far to get the lower bobbins. (Of course, I am height-challenged; you may not have that problem.) To keep the flow going, I want to reach next to me and grab all my colors without dislodging myself.

I would definitely have to stand up to reach the top four rows, but I really don't see that as a problem. It's no more effort than turning my chair around and pulling the floss out of the storage box, and probably a lot quicker!

Oooh, those hanging storage systems look great, unfortunately here in Australia they are quite expensive.

I'm new to cross stitching, and I decided to start with purchasing a bulk lot of 250 colours to begin my collection. I knew from researching storage systems I would want to use bobbins and boxes, so I have done that. Below are photos of them all bobbinated and neatly in their boxes :D
I decided not to order them in the DMC number order, instead I have them in colour shade and then lightest to darkest. This works well for me since I can just look at the pattern and if I see the colour I need is a light green, I can easily find that section then look for the number.

So far it has been working really well, and I love having them so neat and organised! :)

I use the same storage - but your bobbins are much neater than mine. :thinks:

I have 2 double sided boxes similar to those...I think they were designed as screw boxes! I like to store mine in numerical order. Each to their own eh? :D

That looks a neat idea! I think I'd use one for individual projects that have lots of colours. :D

Such great ideas! I'm now excited organize - well that is when I get enough to organize :). I was also thinking of those cheap photo holder books that are $1 and have the opening on the tops and then you can slide them in and out and make your own covers. I can't wait until I have a huge collection and I can make anything i want at anytime!! I just need to win the lottery! :)

I had been storing mine in polythene boxes but came across 2 x 2 sets of drawers in stiff cardboard. I put the threads in small food bags inside the drawers to keep them tidy.

I'm a bobbin in a plastic box kind of girl. I have three boxes of floss, two are for the stash, and the other is for the big projects on deck. I use this system only for projects that are not kits, just patterns that I need to find fabric and floss to complete.

If I'm working from a kit, I have a scrapbooking box with baggies for the threads. I bought the baggies wholesale, and draw the pattern symbol and color number (usually the kits mention DMC or Anchor equivalents) on the baggie. Then I throw the baggies into the scrapbooking box, and I can fold or roll the fabric that I'm stitching on into the box. That way I don't have to worry about missing pieces, or kiddo sticky food fingers, or husband grime all over my stuff.

Great photo of the floss by color. I have a two sided plastic box I keep the floss in on paper bobbins. I usually stick with DMC brand floss. I have smaller plastic boxes that are project specific so they are easy to carry. I also have aa magnetic pin box to keep a few needles in each box (along with a seam ripper!).

I have all of my DMC floss wound on plastic bobbins and have them in the plastic sorting boxes in number order. With fancy colors like the metallic at the very end of the last box. Then when I need colors for specific patterns I can find what I need easily and figure out what I need to buy.

I'm using the DMC stitchbows and plastic wallets. Each WIP will have its own ring binder with the stitchbows in number order, I'll try to take a photo later and post it. Being a PA by trade, I love things in ring binders LOL

LMAO that was entertaining

I got sick of the bobbin business and love plastic bags and binder rings. I hate floss away bags because they only have one hole so I use generic ones from hobby lobby usually. I still have a bunch of floss on bobbins that I haven't used up, and they take up a lot of room. Throwing skeins and pieces into a bag is so much faster and easier and it doesn't come off the bobbin all kinked up.

Here's my new organization draws. Overall, to do everything, cost me under $60.

WOW!! Looks better than the local Michael's and definitely better than the tossed about small section of Walmart! How many skeins and/or bobbins does each drawer hold?
