Which way do you do half stitches?

Post by megandmog »

When doing half stitches in a piece, which way do you do them? The same as the overlying one on whole stitches or the underlying one?

I go for the same direction as those on top in the whole stitches.

Incidentally, for me that's the one that goes bottom left to top right.

I definately do mine to match the top arm of the cross stitch and for me that's bottom right to top left.

I've always done them to match the bottom stitch of the full X. I don't like them, though, so I usually avoid them.

I do them like this: ////

I'm really used to them at the moment, as I'm doing tent stitching for my HAED. :)

My half stitches lay the same way as the top of my crosses. For me that's bottom right to top left

i also do them /// which is the bottom of my regular X. i have never mixed them on one piece though. if i did i think it would be wise to do them to match the top stitch direction. mabel (i think) had an example recently of a tree for a card where she purposely did the tent stitching opposite of the full X and the difference was amazing. you could search her thread for it if someone else can't find the link (like me)!

I do / which matches the top half of my cross stitch.

The most annoying thing is doing / half cross for a while, then starting full crosses again and doing the starting stitch as / instead of \!

Without looking at the project I can't tell you which way. I know I tried both ways and one certainly looked better with the design than the other so I went that way. So that's what would happen in future. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

i do them like this -> / like most others here. I dont mind them, actually I fond it means i get more done cause it's only one way. I dont mind backstitch either though so I guess it depends on what you like. I never used to mind french knots but since i discovered seed beads I have become frnch knot lazy

I prefer them to lie in the direction of the top half of my cross stitches (for me that's bottom left to top right), unless I'm aiming for a specific effect (e.g. there's an angel design I do where the wings are in half cross stitch, and I do the two wings in mirror image with the half cross stitches pointing up and out on both wings -- if that makes sense)

I start full stitches in the Bottom Left to Top Right. /// When I have tried it the other way, it just looks backwards to me.
Half Stitches all depend on what looks best for the pattern
