Zmijanje embroidery

Post by agi »

Just found out about this beautiful embroidery that is on the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage List. There is a video on the website, worth watching.
What is funny that they don't say in the description (or I missed it) that this is cross stitch.

Beautiful stitching! Looks like it is all cross stitch to me and beautifully done. And I didn't see anywhere that mentioned cross stitch, but a cross stitch is an embroidery stitch so I guess calling it embroidery is also true, except that embroidery usually has outlines on the fabric, doesn't it, rather than a pattern? Regardless, they truly make some exquisite pieces. Thank you for posting that link. I enjoyed the video.

That really dark blue thread is very striking, isn't it? Not unlike French "red work". The patterns -- or what I could see of them -- made me think they were almost the opposite of Assisi work. And wonderful to see it being taught -- as if they are proud of their stitching culture.

Thanks for posting. I like the way the lady took her time forming every stitch at the very beginning of the video. :D

This tradition could be related to this Morovian tradition in some way?!

There is an old lady who has actually taken to painting the designs onto housewalls. Even if not, it immediately popped into my head when I saw your link. Thought I would share.

That is fantastic! Wonder what my neighbors would say if I had someone paint such beautiful floral designs on my house? I clicked on the link to the houses painted in Poland also. Amazing.
