DMC number help please.

I'm sitting sorting through my threads and marking off a DMC chart list to see what ones I still need.
So I have discovered a few things. First my colours start from before this chart ... I start and 150, the chart starts at 208.

So three questions from me ...

Have I got old discontinued colours or is the chart I have wrong?

Also some colours on this chart that that another chart I have doesn't seem to think exist, I wondered if any of you who have the full set could check these numbers for me please?
504 (I do have this colour in my box)
731
776
781
806
971
3773

Last question, does anyone know for sure how many threads there are in the full set of stranded cottons. Again I've seen different amounts so I'm not 100% sure.
:thinks:

Thanks !! :D

I just went out and surfed around to see if I could find some place that says how many thread colors they have and didn't find anything conclusive. The DMC page does have an updated chart for all the colors for the 117 thread. If you want to print that and check off what you need or what you have (just let me know which it is) you can fax or scan the list in and send it to me.

Ok, I've been on the DMC site and have now made a chart of the full set of solid DMC colours, I was using their colour charts, but I have a list now numerically, as that's the way I keep mine.
There are 447 solid colours altogether.

The numbers I listed earlier have been replaced.
504 replaced by 3813
731 replaced by 732
776 replaced by 3326
781 replaced by 782
806 replaced by 3760
971 replaced by 740
3773 replaced by 407
The numbers in red don't appear on the DMC charts now.

Incase it helps anyone else, here's my chart.

All the colors you have marked in red except for 806 are in my box. Interesting that they have been replaced.

I have another silly question, Ive always pondered why they have the numbers all over the place  why couldn't they just go from 1?

I would have said the numbering follows their color family but one look at the color card and that's no happening. Not sure why the numbers are all over the place. Unless they've been adding and retiring numbers.

I do wonder if the retired numbers aren't because the dyes aren't available or can't be used any more so in needing to change the formula they have to change the number in case it's not 100% accurate change over.

In several cases where a shade was replaced I find I've got both the old and the new in my thread box, and they are usually close but not the same -- in fact I have sometimes used them both in a single project if I wanted some very close shades for, well, shading :-).
I also have old and new versions of some of the purples where they did keep the same numbers but the shades are quite different, e.g. 554, 209 and 208. Perhaps they didn't want that to happen with these new ones.

Found this Chart for Cross Stitch Floss (Thread). You can fold it and take it with you to the store. :)

Oh, I got so glad for a minute thinking that Threadbear has returned. Has anyone heard of her?

My heart leapt up as well, and then I realised :-( - no, I've not heard from her for years.

I thought so too. the only recent post of any kind that I can find is the one in the chat room. Looks like she has visited a little more recently, so I hope that sooner rather than later we will hear from her again.
