I felt like it would be cheating if I didn't stitch the background and since I stitched it for myself I would feel disappointed in myself if it wasn't done properly. It definitely would have been quicker to do it on black fabric though. Just under 37,700 black stitches was quite a lot! (Although I do prefer stitching big chunks of one colour rather than confetti).
