Re: Rhyme and Reason. Updated 19th July.
I haven't updated this for quite a while but we have been on holiday in the caravan and I took this with me. I managed to get this section finished last week!
The final four nursery rhymes on this section are
Little Boy Blue
Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn;
The cow's in the meadow,
the sheep's in the corn.
Where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under a haycock fast asleep.
Will you wake him? - No, not I!
For if I do, he's sure to cry.
Shakespeare may have inspired or imitated an earlier form of this rhyme, judging by his lines in act III, scene VI of King Lear, "Sleepest or wakest thou, jolly shepherd / Thy sheep be in the corn;/ And for one blast of thy minikin mouth / Thy sleep shall take no harm."
Little Cock Sparrow
Little Cock Sparrow
Sat upon a rail.
Niddle, noodle went his head,
Wiggle, waggle went his tail.
There are a number of related rhymes, cited first in the 18th century, where the bird is referred to as "Little Robin Redbreast" or "Little Bob Robin." Here, the word "cock" refers to a male bird. Many birds were given Christian names. The wren was Jenny; the snipe, Jack; the robin, Bob. The sparrow was most often called Phillip.
Three Blind Mice
Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run!
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife.
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?
Perhaps the best-known verse of all time, "Three Blind Mice" has survived nearly three and a half centuries. Many attempts have been made to read significance into the words, and some believe the farmer's wife represents the Catholic Queen Mary I (1516 - 1558) of England and the three blind mice are the "Oxford Martyrs", Ridley, Latimer and Cranmer, three Protestants who were burned at the stake during her reign.
Jerry Hall, he is so small
Jerry Hall,
He is so small.
A rat could eat him,
Hat and all.
One of the most modern of the Mother Goose tales, this piece of prose first appeared in print at the beginning of the 20th century.
Finishing this section has completed one of my two six-monthly goals on the HAED BB. I'm putting this one away for a bit and have started on "The effects of caffeine" storykeep, which I aim to get finished before the end of the year to complete my HAED 6 monthly goal. I'll start another thread for that.
Thanks for looking

This is just SO gorgeous! I have only seen this today for the first time and have really enjoyed going through this whole thread. Your stitching is amazing and you were so right to stop the 2 over 1 and tent . I love that you are educating us all on the rhymes too! This is a fantastic piece of work and you must be so proud. Thank you for sharing.
