Thanks for all your lovely comments.
In answer to your questions
teresa95 wrote:wow, that looks amazing! your stitches are so even and neat!

not to give myself away as a noobie (i've only been stitching for about four years, with a two-year break in the middle lol) but what is parking?

Teresa, parking is where you've got a number of different threads being worked at the same time (see page 2 of this thread for a photo). It's handy to do when you have a lot of 'confetti' stitching, i.e. no big blocks of colour, rather lots of different colours in a small area with a stitch here and there, giving lots of different shades and resulting in fine detail. Heaven and Earth Designs (HAEDs) are very detailed. You are recommended to work a 10 x 10 square at a time (although this doen't happpen for me, I tend to 'complete a run' so as not to have grid lines showing, but that's just me). You stitch the crosses of the same colour in that square and then 'park your needle at the start of the first stitch of the same colour in the next square along. Make sure that you know where in the stitch you are starting, e.g. bottom left hand corner if that's where you start your 'x', otherwise you won't know what stitch that thread is for, especially if the shades are very similar. If you do a search for parking, you should get a better explaination.
Pengwenn wrote:Are you doing this all on one piece of fabric? I'm thinking about doing mine and working each section separately so when I frame them I could put as much space between them as I like. If you're doing it all on one piece, boy that's a lot of fabric. :shock:
Pengwenn, I have this all on the same piece of fabric at the moment, and as you say it is HUGE!! I'm leaving my options open as to whether I use one or three pieces of fabric. I may go to see the framer to see what they suggest and the logistics of doing it as the pattern says, although I'm leaning towards splitting it up. That's why I'm doing the left hand panel first to see what it looks like. I can't wait for you to start yours!!! I should have an update with the first rhyme on it in the next couple of days. :x:

I'm pleased to introduce you to the first nursery rhyme.

Image
She was completed tonight and it doesn't look like it but she is STREWN with confetti :shock:
Her name is Sally and here is her rhyme;

"Sally go round the sun"

Sally go round the sun,
Sally go round the moon,
Sally go round the chimney-pot
On a Saturday afternoon

I'm afraid I have cheated a little and have acquired James Christensen's book which explains all but one of the rhymes on his painting. (He has left one out so we can try to find it)
His explanation of the rhyme;
'This is a "game song", a rhyme that inspired children to dance around in circles and chant. The origins of the game song can be traced back to the 1500s. Verses that are meant to be accompanied by hand or finger movements, as well as the "counting" rhymes, also fall into this category

My two have certainly been chanting this as I've been stitching it, and we have all learned a new nursery rhyme!!

:applesauce: You have made such amazing progress and this is so good. I don't blame you for getting the book. I wonder how many rhymes some of won't know. I had never heard that one before. Love that your children are reciting it now. This design looks like it will definitely be a family project. Great stitching.

This is such a great piece and your stitching is very lovely. The whole process should be quite educational too. :D I may have to track down that book even if I never stitch this just to find out the history of some of these nursery rhymes.

What a fabulous chart you picked and such a neat way to learn or remember old rhymes, I will be watching this one to the very end.

Very nice!! :applesauce: Can't wait to see what's in store next!

I have actually heard that rhyme before...many moons ago though and I seem to remember someone saying that it originated from a French lady who sold muffins on the streets of Bath in England and she used to call out Sol et Lune (French for sun and moon) to describe the shape of the buns.....dunno where the chimney pots come in though, maybe they were the mis-shapen buns!! :lol:

It's great that you are reading about the rhymes and their history. Some nursery rhymes have some surprising meanings to them.
"Sally Go Round the Sun" is new to me. We learn something new every day, don't we? It's also great your kids are so involved with it all.
Your stitching is coming along fabulously! :applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce:
