2014 Christmas Ornament SAL - Come join in!!

Post by NeedleAndFork »

Here we go! I've had quite a bit of interest in an ongoing ornament SAL so I figured I'd start the thread here. This isn't one of those formal SALs full of rules and requirements - the only thing you have to do to take part is plan on stitching atleast one ornament or christmasy item each month.

I suggest we keep it simple - sign up simply by posting you're participating, and if you have any specific goals for the year, tell us what they are. If you already have a thread where you post ongoing pictures of your WIPs, please include a link to that when you sign up. I'll make a list of everyone participating here in the first post with links to their SAL threads so we can stalk them. If you aren't sure whether you should sign up or not, I say sign up! There's no penalty if you don't finish an ornament each month, I promise I won't come over and tangle your floss or anything. There's no deadline for signing up - so even if you don't find this thread till later in the year, you can still join in the fun.

So.. only thing I'm asking from everyone is to post lots and lots of pictures and have loads of fun! Oh, and whenever you post something, please tell us the name of the pattern or the source you got it from (name and issue of magazine for example) so that if someone else falls in love with it, they can track it down for themself.

Finishing Ideas:

I'm reserving this second post in the thread for posting links to finishing ideas. If anyone finds a great tutorial on how to finish an ornament, please post the link and I'll compile all of them into this post to make them easy to find! Since all ornaments need finishing in some way, this should be a useful resource for all of us.

Sign me up! I tried doing a pillow finish yesterday for the 2 ornaments I made before the new year...they look ok but not great. I still have to hand stitch the opening after turning it right way out and stuffing them. That's the part that will look the worst I think.

I'm planning on doing a tutorial of that method when I get to the next one I do. I've done them both by hand and by machine and whille I think they look better by hand, I think I've got the technique down for both, including getting a pretty neat closure on the part that you sew closed at the very end. That should be sometime this week as I 'm doing them for a friend on comission, and I need to get them to her soonish!

Count me in - I'd like to do some cards so it would be nice to do them spread out over the year. Not sure I will manage one every month but I will try, promise ... :thinks:

I'm in! I love the tutorial idea because I stink at finishing them. I'm going to get my sewing machine fixed soon so I can make those pillow ones that way at least! =)

I'm in as well :D
I'm almost finished stitching the first ornament so hope to have a photo or two by end of the weekend.
The twisted stitcher, a blog I follow has information on various finishes. Can we link blogs? If so I'll edit this post with the address.

Link em all! I'll go through periodically and compile links in the 2nd post so that they're easier to find.

I'll join in too! I always say every year that I'll get my cards done nice and early and it never quite works out, so starting in January will hopefully help!

My goals are to do one card a month, plus there's a few Joan Elliott tree decorations I've got the charts for that I'd quite like to get done but they will be a bonus if they get completed!

This isn't actually an ornament, although it could be, and NeedleAndFork suggested I post it here, so here it is:

Image

The design is Fleur de Lys Trees by ScissorTail Designs, and it's stitched with silk floss on 28 count water lily Jobelan.

I love this one, and just found and saved the free chart.

I think this SAL is going to be fun, and I can see myself accumulating a lot of ornament charts.

Great link! Thanks. I think I'm going to have to be a lurker and collector, too. If I didn't have so many other CCS motifs to finish up first, I'd join in. Have fun!

 Caught me

I was going to join anyway (honest) as I have been looking at my special Christmas Ornament issues of Gift of Stitching. The cross stitch mojo had deserted me in favour of the hardanger afghan but now it's back.

Man, if that's the case, I've got the most in shape body in the world I tell you!
