Silent Night by Mill Hill - Update 8/21/14

Post by shadyglade »

I've been lurking around at everyone's SAL posts for the couple months I've been a member of the forum, so I thought I was time to start my very first SAL!

I know it's a little weird to be thinking of Christmas now, but this is a gift for a friend who collects nativity sets and I figure it might just take me until December from now to get it done.

After sorting through just about every nativity pattern I could find on the internet, I settled for this kit from Mill Hill. It will be my first time working on perforated paper AND my first time doing beading of any kind. Makes me a little nervous...

Here's what it will look like when it's finished: (my first time posting pictures in this forum, hope it works!)

And here's the progress so far after a few hours in the car on the way to my grandfather's funeral. I'm hoping the beads will cover up those blank spots, because right now they're bugging me.

Great start! And it's never to early to start stitching for Christmas. Have you seen the 2014 Ornament thread? Lots of us have started our Christmas ornaments (well, I have barely started...I think I'm a couple months behind now :-().

:applesauce: :applesauce: :D that is a great design and you have made a really good start on it.

Beading is easy - you need a fine needle, either a specific beading needle or I use a longer quilting needle. I always do a full cross stitch through the bead too to make sure it is anchored well. :D

:thinks: Hmmm..., good advice, I hadn't thought of that. Hope not washing my hands with I've done so far is okay. That would be terrible to ruin it. :tantrum:

Luckily the kit came with the fine beading needle too, as I definitely don't have any. Per the instructions some of the beads are anchored with full cross and some with half cross, I guess because they're is two different sizes of beads?

Great start! I have done a couple of these and they turn out more beautiful IRL than in pictures, I think! I was also new to beading and perf paper when I did mine ( I started with ornaments) and it's great for learning. If I remember correctly, the Mill Hill kits want you to do full crosses through the petite beads and half crosses through the bigger beads because it causes them to lay differently (straight vs angled). I did it just as it called for but I think if you have a preference for the way the beads lay, go ahead and do it any way you want!

Great start! I've done one and a half of these kits, they make very impressive presents but are fun to stitch and bead.

Look forward to your progress reports. And yes, the gaps will be filled by beads but don't do the beads til last otherwise your floss will be forever hooking on them when you try to cross stitch.

Great start! I have a large stash of Mill Hill bead kits but haven't started one yet. I also collect nativities so I especially like this design.

I hope she likes it. Cross stitch is not her thing, but she has nativity sets from all over the world and I was looking through an old issue of Cross Stitch Gold one night and went "hmmm, she doesn't have a stitched nativity...."

Hopefully she'll be impressed!

Made a little bit of progress on this so far... (sorry for the wonky lighting, only had my cell phone camera)

Image

The 2000+ mile move across the country (and subsequent searching for employment now that we are here) have REALLY cut into my stitching time. I also find myself consistently distracted by a case of start-itis and wanting to move on to shiny new projects.
