Portrait: "The Eyes Have It": Finished

Post by richardandtracy »

I hope you don't mind me posting my first post as a work in progress.
I have not done many cross stitch pictures since I started stitching in 2011, completed 4 and am on a fifth, this one.
My first was a kit bought from e-bay 300 x 250 stitches, and during the year it took me to do that I decided I wanted to make my own picture as none of the kits really provided what I wanted. So, I looked for free software to convert an image to a chart. I only found 'Ryijy Stitch Designer' by Jari Haurito in Finland. I didn't like the output from his program, though his colour conversion to DMC colours was good. So, I wrote a program to create a chart from the modified colours from Jari's program (he has since incorporated something similar in an updated Ryijy Stitch Designer after I sent him my source code). Anyway, as a result of that I have stitched three other pictures plus this one.

I obtained permission from the photographer to use this image:
Image
Which converted into a page plan (77 x 109 stitches per page):
Image
And in reality, pages 2-4 & 6-8
Image
Finally, 10 days after that photo above and 2500 stitches of plan page 1, we get up to date and see the face appear:
Image

It's done in 14 count on a roller frame. Total number of stitches when complete 30209. Have done about 22500. Started in February 2014, hope to finish before August.

Hope it doesn't seem too mundane compared to some of the amazing projects here.

Regards,

Richard.

Very far from mundane Richard!!! It's brilliant. And you adapted the program as well, skill.....

I hope you continue to post your updates. It's great when you get to the face and see her in her glory

Welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on designing a fabulous chart. It is looking amazing. And it is in no way mundane.

Isn't it wonderful when our multiple talents can work so well together?

Thank you for your kind words - it is rather nice to find I'm not alone in thinking it's coming on rather well.

This picture has been quite fun to do, is the first photograph I have stitched, but has been a bit of a slog at times. I wasn't sure whether to do it as a colour picture or as a monochrome one, but the colour matching with DMC colours wasn't good, and the picture looked much better with a generally monochrome palette, even though there are only 16 colours - and a few of them are surprisingly greenish and purpleish .

One thing I would like to ask is, does anyone know of a reliable rgb representation of DMC colours? I was caught out on one picture as the xstitchtreasures.com list doesn't seem to be entirely correct - even though they are a creditable first try. The colours in the beige swatch are given much lighter rgb representations than came up on my picture, as a result it was rather disappointingly dark.

Regards,

Richard.

Over the weekend I had a bit of time while recovering from (and thinking through the next step of) re-skinning the bottom of my motorhome's rear door, and naturally, hands got busy...

Time for a little more in the way of a progress report:
Image

On Saturday I finished Page 1 of the plan, completing 26024 stitches of the 30209 stitches in the project. (86.1% complete).
Image

Now, I couldn't leave her with half a face, so Saturday evening and a few hours on Sunday led to this:
Image

The picture is about life size, and I was holding the frame up and working on the back when my eldest daughter walked in and shrieked. Apparently I was holding the frame up at the right place & angle for her to see my body & this head... @rotfl:

Richard

Great update on this unusual one. So glad you completed the face, it did look a bit unfinished.
