Mabel's other stitching

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

And here is a thread for any stitching I do (like the heart and the parrot I did recently) that wasn't designed by me.

First one up: a little goldwork bee.

The story so far, condensed version :-). Last december I did a RSN (Royal School of Needlework) goldwork day class which was amazing to do. It sent me back to a small goldwork bee which I started at a 1-hour RSN workshop back in 2009 ( ) but never finished

I've finished off the leaf stem (couched pearl purl - my favourite thread name ever :-) ) and the leaf edge (couched double Japanese thread, some of which - done in 2009 - has buckled and which I will try to get to lie flat), did the wings (couched pearl purl again), and started the chip work inside the leaf.

I love the look of goldwork.

It's not something I would attempt...but I do admire your achievements and versatility.

Hoping to have some more pictures for this thread after Saturday. I'm really looking forward to the Shisha day class - it is just so nice to spend a day with other stitchers, having nothing to do but stitch, and play with new materials, and learn new things :-)! This is another of the RSN classes, I feel really lucky that they chose to have a branche or whatever you call it in Rugby. You can even do a diploma or certificate here, but I'm afraid that is rather prohibitively expensive and as I am not likely to make a career out of it, possibly slight overkill (especially at £1000+ a module - four modules for the diploma, four for the certificate...)

But the day classes are just about affordable (though not too often) and especially great to work on things that you know a little about but want to get better at. The goldwork class was for beginners but I was jolly glad I'd done some before or it would have been quite challenging!

They do the same in Glasgow... perhaps that's what I'll do with my pension windfall and free bus pass...

Had a lovely time at the Shisha day class last Saturday in spite of a blooming cold and some inconvenient coughing fits (picked up some pretty goodies too, I posted them in the Stash Acquisition thread). It was really interesting to see some original Indian shisha embroideries that the tutor had brought, and some of the lovely materials they use.

We were encouraged to create a free-style sampler rather than a formal design, so that we could try out all the stitches we learnt. I knew one shisha stitch already ( but a bit more practice never goes to waste) and then we learnt a different one plus a variation on it. And then some embellishing stitches as well.

Here is what I managed to get done at the class - I've done some more since but I'm just writing a blog post about that so will report back on that later:
