Color of the Wolf - 10 December - Shelved
I started this a couple of nights ago -- right after I finished Vanitas Still Life. It's Color of the Wolf from Unconventional XS. I'm doing it on 25-count Lugana, two-over-one. (I'm such a blend snob now, I don't even want to do one in all solids, but I promised my husband I'd do this one next. He's been waiting almost a year for me to finish Vanitas, so how can I say no?)
This is the image:
And this is what I have so far:
There are only about six colors in the top row of pages. To avoid tension lines, I'm treating that top row as one big page, so what I have there in those long rows is the entire width of the design. Because of the vast expanse of a single color, I've put a red fish-line across the top to mark off the blocks (sometimes counting to five is a challenge, so I definitely needed help counting to 250). The ball-head pins mark the page breaks. Once I get down into the meat of the picture, I can do away with the fish-line and the pins, but I needed help dealing with the vast expanse of solid area. I'm so used to dealing with confetti that it threw me for a loop when I didn't have it here. I'll be much more comfortable when I get into the confetti areas.

There appears to be no hope for some people...
Astonishing speed. I do look forward to seeing how it turns out.

A fabulous and fast start on this unusual one Allyn. What a neat idea to mark the page breaks too, it all helps to keep track of where you are at.

An interesting one and great ideas about the pins and red fishing line, I will need to remember some of these tips!
Re: Color of the Wolf - 19August - New Start
I started my new HAED WIP on Sunday, 2 over 1 on Lugana as well. Mostly two colors in the sky with about 6 colors in all and yet I have completed but 400 stitches! I'll be following along to try to learn as much as I can from you.

I love the idea of pins at page breaks! I never would have thought of that.
What a really different piece. I'd like to follow along and see your progress. You're a really fast stitcher.

Oh, my. That's some design. Interesting technical work-rounds. Question about the pins, tho: don't you prick your hand working double-handed? (Or have I missed something?)

Wow. This design is definitely a unique one. I love the black and white with a touch of red. It's like a colorized black and white photo.
You are making quick progress already. I can't wait to watch this one grow.
Thanks for sharing your progress.

Re: Color of the Wolf - 19August - New Start
Thank you everyone for your encouragement. I know macabre isn't for everyone.
This is the closest I've come -- having these large areas of a single color --to seeing a need for gridding. When I park with plenty of confetti, gridding isn't needed. Putting the fishline across the top to mark the blocks and using the pins to mark the page breaks, so far seems enough for me to keep track of where I am.
I probably should have mentioned the modification. I clip the pins leaving a short shaft -- maybe 1/4-inch long and then I bent the shaft into an "L" shape. My hand does bump the pins on the backside when I'm stitching in that area, but it isn't distracting. The head moves a little when I bump its shaft, but there's no point to stick me and the pins don't fall out. I can move the pin up or down the page-break line if I need it out of my way.Serinde wrote:...Interesting technical work-rounds. Re: Color of the Wolf - 28August - Update
I have about three pages worth of stitching done. Since I'm treating the top row (five pages) as one big page, my progress is more horizontal. So far, it's rather boring -- not enough detail and not enough colors. I should have charted it myself, but here I am.
And for Serinde, here's a pic of one of my modified pin markers:
