A bit more done. Was going to leave it a few more days but now whole kingfisher stitched I thought I would show you now as such lovely colours. Grasses started on bottom right of branch don't show up much as they are pale but will see more of those & white flowers next time.

Thank you all very much. :)

This has been easy to stitch as some fabric is left blank & there's only a few colour changes. When I've had a quiet few minutes late afternoons have been able to stitch a whole leaf or part of one. I now leave thread & needle in place ready to add a few stitches as I got a bit bogged down when I first started leaves top left & did quite a few over a few evenings. Decided to do a few at a time after that.

Thank you both :D Here is another pic after further 10 days. I turned the body round on the dragonfly as it seemed easier than trying to swap wings around. This means dragonfly is going downwards instead of flying upwards. I know dragonflies rest with open wings & damsel flies close their wings when resting. I did think of putting a slender piece of greenery there to make it look like the dragonfly was resting. But decided in the end to add a small leaf about where the body would have been if wings were correct way round.

I apologise if this picture was designed by anyone who belongs/has belonged to this forum but I just could not bring myself to stitch the wings round the wrong way. Insects need larger front wings to aid uplift when they take off. I can put up with a few stitches in the wrong place as my pictures are not identically stitched as per chart but I felt uneasy about the wings.

This pic is slightly tilted but shows top leaves & bottom flowers better

We couldn't have a grounded damselfly now, could we? So you just HAD to change the wings! (In fact if you can find out who the designer is, why not contact her/him? If it were me, I'd want to know and put it right!)

Thank you both. I had the privilege of seeing an emperor dragonfly resting on a hedge in the early morning sun when we were on a camping holiday in Norfolk. DH & children were asleep so I took the dog out for a walk.

It was about 6 am, sun was rising on a clear, crisp morning & I didn't want to lie in bed with such lovely start to the day. The dog & I turned a corner & in the middle of the hedge which had recently been trimmed, was this beautiful turquoise dragonfly with wings outstretched. I was amazed to be able to see the veins in the insects wings & how like gossamer they were. So delicate & sheer. It must have been soaking up the suns rays before starting its day looking for food.

I think it was Simon King on one of the nature watch programmes who told the difference between dragonflies & damsel flies. The dragonfly has its wings open while resting & a damselfly closes its wings when at rest. Just one of those odd nature facts I happen to remember. I don't very often remember much of what they say but this one just stuck in my mind

Just last month we had a lovely electric blue, 2.5 to 3" long dragonfly land on the Leylandi hedge behind us, just a foot away from where we were sitting. It was 4 inches from the nose of Rooster, one of our cats, who had his eyes closed and did nothing. I nudged my wife & pointed to it. The cat heard the rustle, opened his eyes and MUNCH, our nature watch came to an abrupt end.

Hrrumph.

Gorgeous picture, though, and I thoroughly applaud the idea of correcting the wing position. The artist should get it right.

Regards,

Richard.
