Thanks, CF for the photo - I was thinking of finding some examples - but this is just the right one. So the band can be basically anything - one row of speciality stitches, a row of small flowers, a simple backstitch border-line - whatever we want. The art lies in placing them so they create a kind of rythm, and of course, colours :)

i think this is a great idea. i'm not sure i could contribute any bands but i think a bell pull would be darling.

are bell pulls generally a specific size? if so, you can figure out the number of bands at a certain height that would be available and each person commit to a band number before starting.

I don't think there is a specific size - originally they might have been quite long, if they hang from the ceiling (or wherever the wire from the bell came in). I believe we can leave it open - everyone can choose a long piece of fabric and then finish when they feel like it.

I know I am not as good at organising things as most of you - it's not in our culture (seriously! - I am amazed at your efficiency sometimes), and also I tend to be the kind of person who likes to change things on the go and leave things open as much as possible. If you can help me make it more organised, please, do so :)

A band sampler has an additional benefit in that the stitcher can use each individual band in whatever order pleases them, or even repeat bands (or leave them out, come to that). Very flexible.

Whether this flies, or not, I shall prepare a piece of fabric for a sampler. The size will be determined by a combination of my fabric size and the spot where I will hang it when done. Bell pulls range the size from small to large and your imagination is the only limitation.

Agi--I also change things as I go.

OHOHOH! Thank you for the picture. I've seen those before and LOVED them! I've thought of making my own, but haven't ever had the time to yet. I had no idea what they were called though so I had a hard time linking them together. THANK YOU!

Angel would also like to design a band for this if she could? Angels band will probably be pink...

I think that all that really needs to be agreed upon at this point is the height and width we want the original part of the band to be...and I'm guessing that will have to be by stitches not by size so everyone can use the fabric count of their choosing? Then are we going to do it by stitching. I don't think it needs to be much more organized than that... people can design and stitch it at their leisure?

Just so that this doesn't die before its started, thought I would have a bit of a play.
I thought it might be nice to incorporate "cross stitch forum" or at least "c s f" into the design but without it being obvious. I used a small alphabet from Jane Greenoff's cross stitch designer,
Image
squashed together, mirror imaged, and added a few hearts. I went for 70 stitches wide as this would be 5 inches in 14#.
What do you think ? Feel free to ignore if you don't like.

This is lovely, Mags! Well done! And a Great idea!

I was meaning to do something myself, to spur on the others, but with life, illness, school problems, flat problems... kind of forgot. Will be back soon with something.

By the way, I was just going to add, that of course, any saying / quotation/ proverb would be appropriate in a band sampler, I think - just find an alphabet that you like and a saying that you like and whoa, one band is already designed :)

Do you want to keep this thread as the main one for this band design or do you want to make up a new one and give it a different title. If you want I can make it a sticky I could also move it to the SAL section if that would be more appropriate for it to be used and continued. Let me know

Mags I think it is a terrific design.
