Got to teaching myself tatting using this instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Learn-Needle-Tatting-With-My-Flower-Pendant/" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

Image
from left to right: 1st successful attempt at a ring, 2nd more successful attempt at a ring, attempt at flower before I realized the rings were supposed to be connected in the center (I tried using a different tutorial and she didn't explain it well), then final attempt at the flower for the day.

It might not be obvious in the photo, but that last one is all twisted up in places and the center is messy, and some of the rings and chains are smaller/larger than they should be. I think mostly due to the fact that I was getting tired while working on it.

Anyway, I enjoyed learning and will definitely keep practicing until I get better at this. I've got a bunch of scrap threads from my botched attempts, so I will re-use them to practice making rings and chains until I get better at this. Tomorrow. Now, it is time to sleep.

:applesauce: For a beginner I think you did a great job. I was looking at the tutorial and just following the directions would be tricky. It seems sort of like crocheting but not exactly. Hope you have a good "day's" sleep. Looking at the time you posted this it seems like you must have been up all night tatting.

 That's great!! Well done! It looks really pretty.

I had a friend who used to Tat...did some lovely stuff. She used a shuttle.

I found a link for a UK supplier

http://www.tatting.co.uk/ All sorts of stuff there!

Those are great! I didn't realize tatting was around anymore. My grandma tried to teach me when I was pretty young and I thought it was too hard and never gave it another try. I stuck with crocheting instead :D
Can't wait to see what you make next!

I've been wanting to learn tatting...it looks really cool. I wish I could see the picture posted, but that stuff is blocked at my work lol...I'll have to look again when I get home.
I've added tatting to my wish list of things I want to do, but my list is longer than there are hours in the day lol

Good on you Brandi you have done amazingly with it. Love the thread you are using too.

Tatting is one thing I have decided that I cannot do. I've been shown how several times over the years but its in the too hard basket.

Delighted that you have mastered it so well. Sleep well and don't tat during your sleeping time.

Thanks everyone. I just picked up some red and black DMC perle 5 the other day, so I am planning to try some more things. :) I found a cute tutorial for making a tatted mustache to wear as a necklace, so I think I am going to try making that next. :)

Sally, I find knitting and crochet difficult. I just can't wrap my head around working with two needles and my mind boggles over how crochet works. So I'm glad that tatting makes sense to me and I've found it easy enough to do.

Thanks, Rose. :)

I worked on a couple more flower pendants at my mom's house while I was over for a labor day cookout.

and then when I got home I made a small heart or acorn or something with the end of the floss from one of my skeins, then another flower pendant and an attempt at the mustache that I thought I botched, so I ended it and then realized I hadn't botched it... but I'm tired, so I am fine with just letting it go... I'll try again after some sleep.

My grandmother used to tat using a shuttle, and used all the little rings and things to make gift cards, one of which I still have. She would have absolutely loved all these new fabulous threads, too.

Great work! I wonder if tatting designs are undergoing the same sort of revolution as cross-stitch designs have done in the last couple of decades? :thinks:

Thank you! I need to branch out to other brands of thread for tatting as I have seen some absolutely beautiful color variation ones by Lizbeth at Hobby Lobby that I would love to get my hands on, and I haven't really looked through the crochet aisles to see what they might have there.

I definitely think the designs are going through some major modernization. I have found tutorials for some really on trend things, such as the mustache, and tatted masks, fingerless gloves, flip flops... all sorts of things. Definitely not the sort of things that I'd ever seen tatted before.

Great work Brandi and the colours are gorgeous. :applesauce: :applesauce:

They are probably looking for more 'modern' things to tatt so as to attract younger people to the craft so it won't die out. - long may that continue with all our crafts.

Thanks ladies.

Karen, in my original post I link to a tutorial for the flower pendant. The same girl also has the mustache tutorial. She has a video of the pendant and there's plenty of tutorial videos out there. When I bought my needles I didn't buy a booklet or anything so everything I've learned has been from instructables and youtube. :)
