Has anyone had experience with Photo Fabric by Crafter's Image? It's sheets of 8 1/2 x 11" white 'crafter's canvas' that can be run through your inkjet printer.

I bought a package because I wanted to print a photo on it and then stitch over it. I'm still searching for the right photo to use. I know I'll have to use a photo program to decrease the number of colors to a manageable amount. Not sure which program to use.

Before I use it, I thought maybe someone here would have some tips for me. Thanks in advance.

To be honest I've never heard of this. :thinks: But hopefully someone else might be able to advise you. :)

It's the same as this only mine was a package of sheets.

Don't you need to leave at least an inch border all the way around. These don't leave much room to work with.

I'm with TB, never heard of this. It sounds interesting though and do post pictures in the SAL when you decide on your photo.

Never heard of it. I suppose the fabric must be quiet stiff to go through the printer does it soften up when you wash it.

What happens when you wash it?? Will the ink run?? Interesting! :thinks:

I shall watch this one with interest!

That sounds interesting and you could use it to great effect the way you describeit, stitching to enhance a photograph! Wendy, I wonder if it's been treated in some way to make the inks set? Like when you print on one of those iron-on sheets -- I've done a T-shirt like that and that gets washed no problem.

The fabric is stark white and is quite flexible and will be even more so when the paper backing is peeled off. The 'squares' in the canvas are quite small. It was hard to do without a magnifying glass, but I think I counted 25 squares per inch.

Here are the instructions on the back of the package:

1. Open an image using any computer application.

2. Place a single sheet of PhotoFabric in your inkjet printer. For up and over printers, feed with fabric side down. For straight-through printers, feed with fabric side up.

3. Set printer parameters for 'normal' resolution and 'plain paper' to save ink or on high resolution for finer details.

4. When the printed fabric emerges from the printer, allow it to dry completely. Peel the paper backing away. Rinse for 30 seconds under running tap water or until the water runs clear.

5. Place wet fabric on a towel to dry or blot dry with a towel.

Well that sounds pretty straightforward. At least they give you washing instructions too.
Thanks for the info!

Have fun with this!! :D

Here is the image I pieced together from 3 photos:

Image

I purposefully lightened the image and lowered the contrast from what you see above before printing it in order to save ink and so the image won't show as much through the stitching.

Of course I won't be using the exactly colors in the photo. I'll make the cabin lighter so it shows up and I'll darken the lake.

The fabric printed okay but was rubbing on something down one side and kind of smudged the very edge, but fortunately that won't show after I've framed it. The ink is drying, then I'll need to rinse it in water and lay flat dry. Probably be tomorrow before I can start stitching on it. But I can spend today working out the colors I want to use.

I'll keep you all up to date with photos.

It's a lovely image -- how much stitching are you planning on doing on it? I mean, will you practically cover the whole thing, or just outline features, or somewhere in between? Cross stitch or other stitches as well? 1 strand for lightness or more for coverage? (Sorry to be so nosy, but I've never seen anything like this before)

Thanks! I plan on stitching over the entire image. I might mix the stitches up some, haven't decided exactly, I'll take suggestions...like maybe doing half x's for the sky... grasses...lake?

I will start with 2 strands and see how that goes. (And no, you're not nosy, I love your intent interest!)

I let the piece dry for about an hour and then rinsed it. I didn't notice any ink coming out in the rinse water nor did I see any on the towel when I blotted it. It's drying under the ceiling fan and the windows are open...nice breeze today.

The fabric is 100% cotton, very soft and has a lovely drape to it. MUCH softer than aida cloth.

I've started it! The fabric dried really quickly and so I began with the sky. I realized right away that the holes don't make straight squares, but rather slanted squares. So I don't think I'll be cross stitching, but needlepoint, which I have never done, so this will be interesting!

Well I'll be interested to see how you get on with it then. shame it's not right for cross stitch, but I'm sure it will still look great anyhow. :)

Pity it isn't straight, but a mixture of stitches may well give t even more texture and interest! Will you be using any speciality threads, some pearl blending filament for example?
