Q-snaps revisited -- size of working area

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

I've been thinking of getting the smallest Q-snap / Universal Craft / Whatever-they-are-called-in-your-country frame for that afghan I'm planning as it's less likely to mark the fabric and I thought the 6-inch version would be fine as all the squares to be filled are about 3 1/2 inch.

However, I've been doing some Googling about them and came across a site which said that the actual working area of that size frame is only 4 inches square, which would make it a bit cramped.

Is this true? If so, where did the missing two inches go -- is it because to frame is quite chunky and the 6 inch is the outside measurement?

yes they measure from the outside of the qsnap..not the actual working space..weird i know..i had to use an 8x8 for a 6x6 size stitches space...

It's a shame we can't get the 8-inch ones here, they go from 6 to 9 inch which is a bit much for stitching a 3 1/2 inch square. I know I could order the 8-inch one from the US but then there's postage and so on. Oh well.

They look quite light, are they comfortable to hold even at the larger sizes?

I have found that the weight of the frame is really not that much more then a larger size hope frame.

I'm with Rose, the larger really doesn't weigh any noticable amount more. I've used the small ones and they are very comfortable to hold even with larger projects. I finally bought larger ones only because I'm rather bad at putting them on the fabric straight.

I've been using the 17x17 one, and it's light. Awkward only because it's big, so I prop it up. Otherwise, brilliant.

I agree the ackwardness tests your ability to work around the middle but my hubby and I are working on a solution. If it works I will let you all know.
