I am so offended and annoyed and angry right now!

Post by Angel »

So our shower was wired with the wrong wire, and as such the wire melted over Christmas leaving us with no shower and very lucky the fuse cut out because the entire house could have burnt down if it hadn't. So very dangerous! Anyway, we're finally in the position of getting it fixed. The wire was put in over the weekend and were were told to expect the electrician at 11 today to connect it all up....

It's 3pm and the guys only just arrived. Asks Chris about the problem. Chris says he doesn't know and I try and tell the guy the answer, but oh no, doesn't even look at me, or acknowledge me, and talks over me! Doesn't listen to a thing I say! Like I couldn't possibly know a thing about it because I'm just a little woman (I must say at this point the guy is like 60). I'm really offended and angry, I mean other than it all just being bad manners, I feel kinda...It was so sexist! And I could see it in his face, he was just like "Oh look, a girl trying to sound like she knows what she's on about" well EXCUSE ME?! I was installing intruder alarm systems when I was 7. Yes SEVEN! My dad's an electrician, my god father is a plumber and I used to go to work with my dad and have always been interested in learning things from them both! Who the F*** does this ass think he is, showing up four hours late and then acting like that?

GRRRRRRRR :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x So furious!

:x :x :x That really is so annoying! Been there done that--and you'd think by now that things would change--well, it is better than it used to be, but some of the men over 50 still treat us women like we are clueless about anything mechanical etc. At any rate, I do hope you get it all sorted Angel

Ooooh, I would give him a piece of my mind Angel.

We had a guy like that in my work, I work in an Architect's Office in Dundee City Council, and if you spoke to him he would just look right through you, really p****d me off, thankfully he has now retired.

Hope it all works out for you, nothing worse than a bad sparky!! Might be better to do it yourself.

:x :x :x I know! It's not the 1950s anymore. Women know a fair bit about physics now! We even have women rocket scientists! And how can he look down his nose at me? Even if I knew nothing about electricity, at least I know how to tell the flipping time! 11am is when the little hand points at 11 and the big hand at 12, not when the little hand is at 3 and the big hand is on it's way to 12. The little git! :x :x :x

So would I, but I can't fix the shower. I don't have the parts and I want my shower!

Next time, in lieu of giving him a piece of your mind, give him a piece of your knee right in his groin :)

Blimey! That's sooo exactly how I feel at the moment but for completely different reasons! (It's my boss being insensitive not a plumber).

Hope he fixes your shower even if he is annoying!

It was very patronising and annoying, but just tell yourself he should be pitied for not knowing any better -- he's going to miss out on a lot of interesting conversations and friendships with an attitude like that!

UGGGGHHHHH That's so FRUSTRATING!!

I work in an auto repair shop, so I fully understand the mentally of most men over 60. Its gotten a bit better now that I'm in my 30's, but when I first started here at age 22, it was rather trying.

Some men still see women as the "lesser sex". I really enjoy showing them that I'm not a complete idiot. Did the man fix the problem? If not, I'd call someone else.

Yeah he's fixed it, came into the living room and tried to explain what he'd done to Chris, once again didn't look at me, so I didn't bother going to see what he'd done, but I kid you not, he did describe the fuses as "It now has two things there" and proceeded to proclaim his genius at having "discovered" there was no fault with the shower itself, or with the wire connecting the switch to the shower...Well WOW Einstien! I'm so proud of you, you do realize though that if you'd taken two minutes to listen to me, I could have told you that and saved you half an hour of testing? It's taken the guy an hour and half to finish working! An hour and half! It was a thirty minute job! But no, let's not get the information needed and then let's talk very loudly about how you'd "Have killed her if she'd done that" and other such remarks that only fuelled my anger despite me hearing them out of context. Oh, and they didn't bother taking their shoes off on the carpet either, so more work for me. Urgh, the arrogant pig!

That's outrageous but not unheard of--they do that a lot here too. Especially given that they get paid by the hour or half hour, so what do they care if the job takes them longer, they end up getting more money for it. Thank goodness for me that my hubby is very knowledgeable about alot of home repair, and if he can't fix it, he can at least tell the repair person just what is the trouble.
So sorry to hear that they've made a mess of your carpet too :x

Sadly, because we rent the property, we have to take what we get given, even when the fools are just that.

my daughter works in farming
she says you have to do 3 times the hours 3 times the work and if it turns out right
it's a fluke
she's starting to get respect from people she knows ,but still has to struggle with people she doesn't

if you want a laugh she got her first job because of her name toni ,they thought it was tony
when she turned up as a relief milker for 2 weeks work experience ,they told her later they thought how much damage can a lass do in 2 weeks ,we'll get her bottling ,after 2 weeks they asked her to stay ,and she releif milked a herd of 90 cows for 4 years
they keep asking when she's coming back but she lambs and drives tractors now

so the person is missing out big time ,i've had an experience again in farming ,
when i offered to help,
got on really well injecting the ewe's so they thought well it's the ewes ,and chucked me in with the rams ,who can be dangerous ,bit of wiggling making the pens smaller so they couldn't get power behind them when they tried to get me and got it done ,i injected 350 sheep that day ,most of them in the village ,,before everyone talked to my husband about sheep as women don't do them ,he didn't have a clue ,used to ask what they were on about when they left ,i get asked about breeding and sheep and livestock now but it's taken about 6 years
they really are missing out on a large ammount of experience and i do feel a bit sorry for them being so narrow minded

sorry you had to deal with such ignorance and disrespect Angel. Hopefully at least he did fix it properly and you can have your shower back. It's pretty frustrating to deal with that attitude in this day and age.

Closed minded people like that piss me off. I've told a few people off when they've started talkin to my girlfriend at the computer store. Cause they try to explain it in simple terms and yet she's built 8 computers for herself and a few more for others and for fun when she was younger she rebuilt electronic stuff. Also inwork in a field where it's mostly men and the older guys still treat women like they know nothing. but it's good to see how far the world has come with views on society.

I have a question though, why do you need electricity for your shower??? :thinks:

I hear you. I was employed to take over a legal practice for a male in his late 60's - he was meant to get me accustomed to his files, introduce me to his clients to make the transition to the new solicitor, me, easier. At the time I had a junior clerk (solicitor in training) who just happened to be older than me - in his late fourties and male.

My boss did the appropriate thing and introduced us over a luncheon at which time he told the retiring solicitor how I had been a senior litigator, had appeared in the High Court, won some famous cases, was the President of our Law Society etc. So he knew full well my expertise.

But the old retiring solicitor refused flatly to say anything to me other than "get us some coffee would you dear". Instead he insisted on trying to inform my clerk - who understood non of it because he simply didn't have the experience.

I'm afraid sexism is alive and well.
