crayon tinting

Post by crossstitchpro »

I decided to experiment a little with crayon tinting the background for my next project. It's a small Morning Glory. I didn't do a perfect job, but was pleased with the results none-the-less. :)
Here's some pics of what I've done so far. They're the first ones in the "Newest Projects" album.

Also been stitching more on "Near Kennebunkport". Pics of that are right after the crayon tinting pics.

Happy Stitching!

Almost forgot....here's a link to some more info on crayon tinting:

That is interesting. I would have never thought of doing that.

Couple questions does the color rub off on your hands as you are stitching?

Can you wash the piece after stitching? She said in her directions to was before but, I always wash my finished pieces so I was wondering if you could and how it is recommended?

Did you iron it like she said and did it set in well?

This really looks very interesting -- and so useful if you want a particular colour but don't want to go and buy a fat quarter of it! Like Rose I'd be interested to know whether you could wash it afterwards, though, but if you can I'll certainly dig out the boys' crayon box and have a go!

It looks interesting. I love the way the colours match the threads like that.
Although, I have to say, I was imagining the wax crayon melting when ironing and also it marking, say a white thread, especially if it needed frogging. :ribbit:
But maybe you would only tint pieces if you were sticking to those kind of colours?

i, too, wonder if the crayon will rub off onto white thread while stitching..even if heat set..
i think i'll attempt this..with a small piece of scrap..some white thread..and a small design.
I'll also wash afterwards to see...

I'll update later this evening with pictures..

Hello All,
this is the first time I've done this, so it's new to me too....

I'm trying it on a small project too.
After coloring, I ironed it, using paper towels to absorb the excess wax. After that, I gently washed/scrubbed it with a toothbrush and dish detergent. That got out more wax and softened the color a little.

This afternoon, I worked on the design (it's a morning glory flower) and stitched using cream colored floss. It didn't discolor at all.
Will keep you posted... :D

Not tried crayons but I have used ordinary water colour paints. I've painted backgrounds sky and grass!
After painting I let it dry then rinse several times to remove any excess before stitching. It's worked well so far!

A few years ago we visited a display of various arts and crafts, the one that sticks out in my mind is an artist, Gill Shaw.
Gill paints on Aida then builds up the rest by cross stitching and other techniques, I have a wonderful card but I don't think I am allowed to copy it on here, so I won't risk it.
I have tried to find examples on line, but she is very elusive, it is a shame as her work is fantastic.

That's very interesting and easy. This video from Youtube shows another interesting technique for painting using dyes. I would think you could use watercolors as well to achieve the same effect without the mess. I've been curious but not had the time to attempt it though it definitely would give a love effect without boxing you into the handdyed fabrics you can buy.

I tried to find some links to this artists work as it sounds really interesting , but no luck. What a pity.
