I discovered plastic canvas over the holidays and made myself some pretty contemporary coasters. So I'm thinking of trying needlepoint. Just wondering if anyone does needlepoint too.

I'm really surprised at how much more variety there is with needlepoint patterns/canvases than cross stitch. At least, there's more contemporary and abstract stuff, which I like.

I really like the canvases from these two sellers. I love the whimsical and contemporary stuff.

Sigh...I'm going to have to live to be 300 years old to finish all the things I want!

I prefer needlepoint and have bought from both those stores. You might also like

from which I bought "In Vino Veritas" (very roughly: wine brings out the truth) yesterday:

and last month:

plus several others in the past year.

Currently close to getting this one from Kathys Spare Room:

I will need 10 lifetimes (or more!) to complete the canvases I have but at least they're nice to look at. I hope my kids will like their inheritance. :P

Ooo, goodie, more canvases to sort though. I love your choices, and in fact, have been eyeballing that last one from Kathys Spare Room myself.

Where do you get your thread from? Do you use wool or....?

Edited to say I just bought this canvas, which I've been loving since I first saw it.

The 'In Vino Veritas' is a bit weird-looking until you study the pic closely. I just hope it looks good when complete as I want to give it to my wine-loving father-in-law/

David Venne's got some fabulous canvases hasn't he and that's one of them?

Yes, I've always used wool until recently as 10ct penelope double canvas is the standard in Australia. However, since I started buying kits and canvases from the UK & US I've used cross stitch embroidery cotton and DMC matte soft cotton:

http://www.dmccreative.co.uk/Products/Needlework-Threads/Needlepoint-Threads/Soft-Cotton.aspx?technique=Needlepoint" target="_blank" target="_blank

I buy the soft cotton on eBay as it doesn't seem to be readily available. It's not even listed on DMC's US website that I can find. It's matte and not as bright as floss.

I buy all my cotton and wool on eBay if I can as the average price tends to be about 1/3 of Australian retail prices.

Late last year I got 50 no-longer obtainable Australian-themed & mixed canvases (some as big as 48" across) and 400 skeins of wool for $150.00 which had to be the buy of the year. And I was the only bidder!

My 'trigger finger' is so itchy for that pink and grey number at Kathy's.

Oh, I think your canvas will be lovely. I like the way it appears to be something different at first glance. :)

THAT was a heck of a buy! Wow! You're going to be busy-busy-busy even if you never buy another thing again, lol.

I'm thinking of buying one of those Appleton sample cards I've been seeing on eBay. The closest shop I have that carries wool is 3 hours away so I'm stuck buying stuff online if I want wool and need to be able to see accurate colors. However, I'm playing with a little design I did based on a Charley Harper (illustrator) bird on plastic canvas right now and am using regular DMC x-stitch thread and liking it a lot. I'll be trying DMC perle cotton too.

And I'm doing the background of my bird in plain sport weight yarn leftover from a crochet project. Fun, fun. I like how much variety there seems to be with needlepoint.
