Starting new project---not finished with the current

Post by CarolinaGirl »

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've been here! I have not totally abandoned my stitching though.... I've been knitting and i took cake decorating classes! Love that!! I have recently picked back up my stitching--- I am working on a a winter sampler by Janlynn---I have all four seasons. My question is... I want to start a new season sampler, but I'm only half way through with the winter one.... Do you guys ever stop and start something new? Because you get bored with what you are doing? Or made a few mistakes you really don't feel like dealing with at the moment? Great to be back reading all the post!!!

I'm always starting new thing whilst I have a big project on the go.

It gives me a break from them, renews the interest when I 'find' them again.

You should see my UFO pile...well maybe not!
Also there are always little 'must-do's' like birthday cards and biscornu to fit in as gifts.

Don't worry about it! It's not as if you're inactive in the crafting line!

All the time! I currently have 3 projects on the go and a fourth ready to start whenever I get the urge for something different. There's no rule that says you have to finish one project before you start a new one. If you're put off by (or just bored with) your current WIP go ahead and start a new one. The old one will be there waiting for you when you're ready to tackle it again. :D

I too used to only do one project at a time and if I got bored then I was off stitching, sometimes for months. Then I found this forum and discovered, as I like to say, it wouldn't be breaking any laws and the cross stitch police weren't going to arrest me and confiscate my stash if I started another project. And you will be able to see by my signature that I have also become a serial starter. And I love it. If I have a deadline I can stay with one project until it is completed, otherwise I go to the project that screams loudest at the time.

Like Carole said, I used to pick up one kit (as it was then, not charts and putting it all together from scratch as it is now - much more fun in my opinion!!!) and keep going at it until it was finished. Sometimes that would mean that I'd get bored with that project and have a year off stitching until I got interested in that project again  . It never even occurred to me that I could start something new in the meantime  Now I too have quite a few projects on the go, with yet more in the pipeline. Just stitch whichever one you're in the mood for. They (should) all get finished eventually.

I used to be a one and done project worker then I started stitching gifts that I had to hide from the family. (Gifts for birthdays or Christmas) Now I have found that I like to have several on the go to keep my interest going.

Sure do! I like rotating projects. Like you said, sometimes I get kind of bored with a project, especially if it has a lot of the same color.

Yes, folk, it is possible to stitch one project at a time LOL I have been stitching for almost 70 years and never have multiple stitchings underway. Mind you, I will stop to stitch a card or ornament when necessary but my thought is that I would hate to leave this world knowing that I had 6 or 7 unfinished projects. As each of mine are finished I make sure they will have a good home when I am gone, in the meantime I enjoy them.

i wanted to start a rotation, but found that i like my current project too much to stop! :)

but i now know that it's ok to leave it when i do get tired and want to see my autumn sampler again, or need a quick finish from an ornament.

i also know that every time i do leave a project and then get back to it, my work on it is better, more enthusiastic. i've usually learned something new from the in-between project that helps the first one move along. the stitching is neater and the back is cleaner.

all this learned on this forum. i am so grateful!!! :applesauce:

Yes. But I generally pick it up before starting something a second new project. So I'm stitching "A", get tired of it and start stitching "B" instead. Then I'll go back to "A" either before or when I finish "B". I won't start "C" until "A" is finished.

But I almost always have a smaller and a larger project on the go together.

I now have 2 on the go at home and 1 which I will take with me to my embroidery group or take away with me later next month. It is easy to do and I love your idea of stitching the season when it is around.
