Question from a CS newbie: what is the blue stitching on the edge of the fabric? I do realise it's probably to stop fraying. I'm used to needlepoint and have always used masking tape around the edges of my canvas and am now wondering if anyone uses masking tape for CS. The blue edge stitching looks awfully time consuming (unless it's done by a sewing machine).

I use masking tape which is not supposed to be the best option but I don't have a very good sewing maching (just a hand held thing I don't know how to use) so I don't stitch around the edges. I do have two pieces that have been stitched but that was done at the LNS where I purchased the fabric. She does that for free. Otherwise, I am either nothing or masking tape.

It's called over-casting, but I don't own a sewing machine and the only tape we have around here is either scotch or packing tape.

It did take a while, but cross stitching in general is time consuming in my opinion (one of the reasons I love it so)- and even if it's an extra hour so the end product is beautiful, why not?

I'd love to have a sewing machine one day (that I know how to use) and just surge(?) the edges of my fabric. But they're expensive.

I may just wait and try to hijack my mother's in several years down the road. She has an AWESOME one that folds into a desk so you can use the desk as a desk or unfold the sewing machine o.o!

The only thing I would have done differently about this project so far is ditch that red back-stitching and find a darker color. If it looks like it disappears into the flower, that's because some of the x-stitches are the same red. I don't think it 'pops' very well unless it's on the pale pinks.

But since it's done, I'm not going to :anotherfrog: it out to do it again. @.@

Thanks Carole and Gabrielle.

I actually bought this kit last year when it was on sale with an eBay seller and seeing how beautiful it is has made me want to make a start on it in the next few months.

I'm so enjoying watching this project progress.

I got mine from "Everything Cross Stitch."

It went on sale 2-3 days after I bought it, but it was still only like $7 at full price. I have the border all done and I'm working on finishing up the green on the birds right now.

I keep thinking it's a stained-glass piece every time I only glance at it.

Edit:
I'm picking out French Knots because I managed to make a mess. At least 3/4 flowers have nice knots. x.x

Last of all the green done!

The basic body of the bottom hummingbird feels like it's already in flight!

Last look before I finish the back-stitching and it's finished (minus framing/washing)!
