Framing
Does anybody frame their own work.
Husband has taken 2 of my finished projects in for framing and they will cost £210
One is very large and the shop does do a lovely job but I'm thinking I will have to start doing my own larger projects

Re: Framing
I frame some of my work, but there are a few problems:
1. It has to fit a standard size frame, or else I have to let the professionals do it. The selection of frames and mats is limited to say the least.
2. The frames are made to fit a photograph, so when I frame the thicker cross stitch it will be mashed into the glass, there is no room for spacers. You could of course frame it without glass, but I think it looks ok with glass too.
3. I stretch it over a piece of cardboard, using the lacing method. The cardboard should be acid free, which is not easy to get here in Sweden, so I had to send for it from an online art store.
Still I decided to do this more after I got a piece back from the framer and wasn't happy with the result.

Re: Framing
Your comments are exactly why I have them professionally framed, but it is getting a bit expensive now
Re: Framing
I frame my own work, especially since I discovered the grip-n-frame! (google it if you want to see how it works and where to buy) So easy now. And because I leave wide borders these days, it will always fit in a store bought frame. Granted the larger ones I have to go to a picture frame shop, but they're always store bought.

Re: Framing
My husband has taken over framing my pieces.. He's much better at it than I that's for sure.. Although I was VERY mad when he used nails (or something like that) to tack up one of my pieces

Re: Framing
I frame my own mostly, I buy made to measure frames from ezeframe. They are always exact,y the right size and they look exactly like how they look on the website. They are not massively cheap, but well worth it. I tend to just use the backboard and I choose to frame without glass.

Re: Framing
I get all my pieces framed, usually with 2 mats and clear glass. The shop that has been getting most of my business lately is Jo Ann Fabric but that is coming to an end. The last piece I got framed there wasn't stretched straight and the employee annoyed me with her excuses of why she couldn't get it straight. I'm a bit of a red @$$ when it comes to my cross stitch art looking great in a frame so not having a near perfectly stretched piece is quite the annoyance. Plus the cash that I dole out for these people to do the work. AHHH...
If I had the space in my house to put a mat and glass cutter I'd frame all my own art.

Re: Framing
I do all of my own framing. For me, that's part of the fun. Sometimes I even find the frames first and plan the stitching around them. For example, I used 36 count to fit the designs into a pair of frames. Another time I found some cute little frames and then found a design and color of linen I thought would go best with them. I found the perfect frame for one thing but it already had artwork in it (which I didn't like.) I pulled it all out and just used the frame and mat. I bought a wonderful frame for a particular project and it turned out it was a little too big but then I started another project that it's going to be perfect for. So, I have a frame stash! I love to look in discount stores and sales for pretty frames.

Re: Framing
I have framed smaller things myself and am getting a bit better at it but the big pieces that take me a long time to do and are for gifts I have had done professionally, the shop I use (Betty Stitchkit in Quarry Bank UK for any local folks on here) I at first thought was a bit expensive but since looking into it and hearing how much other people pay actually seem to be very reasonable and so helpful, the shop is lovely as well so many lill bits and bobs you dont know you need till you see them lol

Re: Framing
I was in Betty Stitchkit only this morning (well, yesterday morning now ) picking up Gazebo, which I took in a week ago to get framed. I'll try and post a picture later this weekend. It's the second project I've had framed there and for 'proper' presents I wouln't go anywhere else now. I did have one of my large projects framed here in Brum a couple of years ago but it was very expensive and they had to send it away, whereas at Betty Stitchkit they do the framing on the premises. Like cristaltipps I try and frame smaller pieces myself and also have a bit of a frame stash, but bigger pieces I'll keep using the pros until I get more framing experience.cristaltipps wrote:I have framed smaller things myself and am getting a bit better at it but the big pieces that take me a long time to do and are for gifts I have had done professionally, the shop I use (Betty Stitchkit in Quarry Bank UK for any local folks on here) I at first thought was a bit expensive but since looking into it and hearing how much other people pay actually seem to be very reasonable and so helpful, the shop is lovely as well so many lill bits and bobs you dont know you need till you see them lol

Re: Framing
Not much of my work ends up framed, but the few bits that have I've had professionally done. I have laced my own work, but wouldn't know where to go from there to get it into the frame !
I'm looking to get my in-laws' anniversary sampler framed at the moment, I'll lace it myself over some lavender felt (if I can find it) and then need to find a frame. Might try ezeframe, they sound good, and must definitely look into Betty Stitchkit which I don't think is too far away from here
Edited:
Ah. Just seen it's the other side of Birmingham from us. Rats.

Re: Framing
I tried to look at that grip-n-frame but being on dial up my connection was too slow
