Embroidering onto clothes

Does anyone do this? I'm considering customising some plain tshirts but really don't know how to go about it. Anyone know? I have some lovely little designs in various CS magazines that would look great on t shirts but I have never tried to stitch onto anything but aida.

I had done some many years ago. All you need is some Waste Canvas or Waste Away. Can be found at your LMS or Joann's sometimes WalMart. Comes in a few different stitch size.

Yes waste canvas is the way to do this. I use it all the time for bags and shirts and I did a whole quilt for my daughter using waste and cotton fabric. If you are going to us t-shirts then you will also need to consider a basting fabric as the stitches will pull the light material used in t-shirts. If you are considering sweatshirts then you don't really need any basting material.

Try it on something cheap or wast material first. I say that because I really struggled when I tried doing this - even using waste canvas.

But I have to admit I'm not really talented at these sorts of things

I've done this a couple times and really thought it was ok. I embroidered on denim shirts , light weight ones, and it went well. I really like Rose's suggestion to use another layer with a t-shirt. That sounds like a really good idea. Good Luck.

OK, what is waste canvas and basting fabric and what's it for? Looks like this is going to be more complicated than I thought!

I call it basting material but the technical term is Interfacing and it can be found in pretty much any sewing store and if you ask at the store the clerks can help you pick the best material for your project. Here is a link that shows some different options.

I usually us the fusable type as it is the best to help it stay in place when stitching.

It is not hard to do at all. I am currently working on a denim bag and using waste canvas. It is great to work with.
