Re: Pathogens bingo...Numbers are up!
Got # 20 in both senses giving me 7/10. Just wish this sinusitis would clear up and go away - but spring is here.

Re: Pathogens bingo...Numbers are up!
Will we have a winner today.....the numbers are....27 and 28!
27. Trichomonas vaginalis
Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasitic protozoan, which causes trichomoniasis by infecting the urogenital tract of both females and males. Trichomoniasis is the most prevalent nonviral sexually transmitted disease. According to the WHO, there are about 170 million cases annually worldwide. Some of the complications of trichomoniasis in women include: pre-term delivery, low birth weight, and increased mortality during pregnancy as well as predisposing to HIV infection, AIDS, and cervical cancer. T. vaginalis has also been reported in the urinary tract, fallopian tubes, and pelvis and can cause pneumonia, bronchitis, and oral lesions. Condoms are effective at reducing, but not wholly preventing, transmission. Recent research also suggests a link between T. vaginalis infection in males and subsequent aggressive prostate cancer.
28. Epstein-Barr virus
The Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), is a virus in the herpes family and is one of the most common viruses in humans. It is best known as the cause of glandular fever. It is also associated with particular forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and central nervous system lymphomas associated with HIV. There is evidence that infection with the virus is associated with a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, especially dermatomyositis, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Infection with EBV occurs by the oral transfer of saliva, the origin of its nickname ‘Kissing Disease’. Most people will become infected with EBV and gain adaptive immunity. In the United States, about half of all five-year-old children and 90-95% of adults have evidence of previous EBV infection.

Re: Pathogens bingo...Numbers are up!
Good luck everyone....todays numbers are 12 and 14!
12. Clostridium botulinum
Clostridium botulinum is a rod-shaped bacterium that produces several toxins. The best known are its neurotoxins, that cause the muscular paralysis seen in botulism. They are also the main paralytic agent in botox injections! C. botulinum is a spore-former and produces oval endospores that are commonly found in soil, the spores can survive in most environments and are very hard to kill. They can survive the temperature of boiling water at sea level, thus many foods are canned with a pressurized boil that achieves an even higher temperature, sufficient to kill the spores. However growth of the bacterium can be prevented by high acidity, a high ratio of dissolved sugar, high levels of oxygen, very low levels of moisture or storage at temperatures below 3°C. Botulin toxin produced by the bacteria is often believed to be a potential bioweapon as it is so potent that it only takes about 75 nanograms to kill a person, thus 1 kilogram of it would be enough to kill the entire human population……and people inject this stuff into their face!
14. Clostridium perfringens
Clostridium perfringens is a bacterium that can be found as a normal component of decaying vegetation, marine sediment, the intestinal tract of humans and soil. It is the third most common cause of food poisoning in the U.K. and the U.S.A. However an infection with this bacteria can sometimes cause clostridial myonecrosis also known as gas gangrene. This can be caused by C. perfringens entering the body via a large skin lesion/wound. It can then produce a specific toxin that causes a gas accumulation within the actual muscle tissue, this nasty condition if not treated may require amputation of the affected area and in some cases can be fatal. Gangrenous infection by soil-borne bacteria was common in the combat injuries of soldiers well into the 20th century, due to non-sterile field surgery and the basic nature of care for severe projectile wounds.
