knots (the good kind) - how do you?

Post by afdish »

I'm curious....

Do you use French knots or Colonial knots?

Do you come up and go down in the same hole, or do you keep at least a fabric thread in between the come up and go down points?
Happy Stitching!

I love french knots and use them rather then beads when a project calls for them. Colonials and I do not seem to work together.

I come up in one hole and then go down over just a bit but not in the same hole.

I use French knots - I haven't been able to get my head around colonial knots yet - I know others find it easier.

I always try to keep at least 1 fabric thread between my coming up and going down points, but sometimes I misjudge. then my knot tends to come undone and I have to do it all over again lol

I use Colonials and I go back down close to but not in the same hole the knot started in.

I do French knots, but I'll switch to a bead if I think the design would be better for it. I leave a thread in between. I'll go the hole right above if the knot needs to be inline -- like when dotted an "i" -- otherwise I'll go one hole diagonally and treat it like a quarter stitch.

I do French knots and go down the same hole I come up in, but I do take the thread an extra trip around the needle.

Beads preferably, but French knots if beads won't work.

Ironically this is a bug bear for me that I've just sort of solved. I am so bad at French knots, I either make them too loose or pull them through. So I looked up a colonial knot and have been using that with success for my Kings and Queens. Ironically I can do French knots fine with metallics and thicker floss #8 or #5.

I've used beads before now and will again, but on a big longwinded project like K&Q I'd be sure to forget I had to do them at the end until I'd just framed the damn thing.....

I'm really not sure that a French knot or colonial knot look any different..

Until I learned to go down one hole over from the one I came up, I had a terrible job with any kind of consistency with French knots. Some would be beautiful and some would look like knotted thread rather than a stitch. Thanks to our very own Mabel (instructions from the SAL) I think I have managed to conquer them. Which is good, since I don't do beads unless I absolutely have no choice.

I go up in the hole then wrap 2 x's around needle, then "split" the middle thread to go back under..
I taught myself to do French knots in candlewicking. Love candlewicking. For Christmas on my 3 rd year of doing cross stitching, I candle wicked a pink dogwood bloom and made it a pillow for my oldest sis.

I like french knots since I got my stitchy stand to hold the project! Haven't gotten the hang of colonials, tho. I go down just slightly above where I came up, with a tiny bit of fabric or floss between...
