Glad to hear your lesson went well! :) the device to ask to drive to regular places you would use is great I think! I'd also try parking there too. Test centre car spaces are definitely bigger than regular car parks!

Good for you!! A clutch? I've never driven a stick...I'm pretty sure I'm too uncoordinated for that. Keep us updated.

Glad you did well and now that the initial behind the wheel is over you can relax and move forward. Everyone's steering is a bit dodgie at first, it will get better with practice. I learned to drive with a clutch and it was wonderful to get into an automatic.

I think I'll enjoy an automatic as well, but we decided that it would be more practical to learn in a clutch one so that I could drive either. Next lesson Tuesday!

Good idea to learn with a clutch and then switch to automatic. I learned on an automatic and the few times I've driven a clutch were disasters.

Good luck for the lesson tomorrow, Mabel. I'm sure you'll get the hang if it in no time :D
Incidentally, I just googled Burford Needlecraft and the owners are retiring on 31st March, so if you need to go or to buy anything from their site, you need to get a move on :driving: :airplane:

:tizzy: :tizzy:  I must send my friend in there before they close then. Shame! It's a wonderful shop and was full to busting with things a stitcher never knew she needed. I used to get fabric off cuts of all counts and colours for really good prices. They would cut to whatever size you needed and were often very generous when cutting to standard sizes too.

AAAAAAAAARGH!

Aren't they selling it on or anything? is it closing altogether?

Well.

I might as well quit the driving lessons then ;-)

Don't give up!!!
They are retiring. I asked my friend to find our more!! She drives through Burford regularly as she lives very close.
Lets hope that it will continue with new owners! :x:

Good luck for your 2nd lesson today.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the website says that as there is no one to take the shop on, it will be closing altogether. I must try and take a trip down there before it shuts. What a shame :(
Hope your second lesson went well, Mabel. Don't quit the driving lessons, you'll just have to come and visit Betty Stitchkit instead :D

Not sure it'll happen :( Had a bit of an emergency stop today (nothing dangerous fortunately, just a bout of sudden panic) and it's dented my confidence.

Don't let that prevent you from getting back behind the wheel. I'm sure you're not the first to experience that and your instructor should know how to handle it. If driving is something you really want to learn, you can. You'll face hurdles along the way (sudden stops, panic attacks, and whatever else) but you can overcome those with determination.

For now, relax and stitch something pretty.

Now that is good advice! Or play with stash - that's very relaxing too.

I was in my early forties before succeeding in learning to drive - on the fourth test (!). and remember the many panic attacks I had. I do think it's more difficult to learn when a bit 'older' probably because we're more aware of the dangers than the carefree young are. But, don't be tempted to stop, Mabel, you'll never forgive yourself; it is a great asset to acquire and just think of the places you can go to and things you can do once you pass. In fact, I would not have been able to do my last job if I hadn't learned because I had to be able to visit, sometimes at very short notice, ill and elderly clients in hospital , nursing homes or in their own homes.

It happens to many of us when learning to drive. And that's normal. Ayna's comment about being more aware of the dangers involved with driving makes sense. Relax and know that you have more lessons and practice. When my sister started driving, we put a sign in the back of the car which said something like New Driver, please be patient. But it was clever and I can't remember it exactly. Kind of giving some info to the drivers around us. Also made her feel a little more confident since she felt other drivers might be a bit more patient with her. Just a thought.
