Jane Greenoff's Cross Stitch Pattern Creator 2 on XP

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

I've been using the Jane Greenoff pprogram very happily, a few quirks but haven't we all, but now I've got this new computer which runs Windows XP (my old one was Windows 98SE) and it'll still create charts but IT WON'T PRINT! Which is useless! Does anyone have any idea what I could do about this? If not, all the charts I've created with it are useless to because I can't print them and if I get a new program it won't be able to read them :-(

I've been Googling like anything, but so far the only solution I've found is "ditch the program or return to Wondows 98", which doesn't really seem practicable.

The only thing I can think of now is to install the program onto one of the old office computers which still runs Windows 98, install my PDF printer driver on that computer as well, and save all the charts I've created so far as PDF files, which can be read whatever cross stitch software you've got, and then get and learn to use a new program. *is not a happy bunny*

Any ideas?

I have a vague recollection of someone telling me that xp has something on it that helps it run 98 programs.
I'll wander round my computer now and see if I can find it.
It's all very vague in my brain ... Nothing new there then!!!

Don't know if I've found the right thing but ...
You go to control panel
Select help and support from the left hand side
Under pick a help topic, look towards the bottom, one up from last to be precise ...
select Fixing a problem
Then choose Applications and software
you can then look at either, under 'fix a problem'
getting older programs to run on windows XP or under 'pick a task' Run software that worked with previous versions.

Hopefully one of those might help. Worth a try anyhow.

Tried it, lost toolbars :-). I think I'll have to accept it's not going to work and save what can be saved. Oh well, there are worse things -- I'll just go and read the thread about cross stitch programs and see which one comes most highly recommended (getting a new program is practically stash buying, which must be good, right?)

Oh shame. :( It was worth a try.

At least you get new stash! Maybe you'll be able to pick something up on ebay?

I've got Jane Greenoff Cross Stitch Pattern Creator 2 Version 1 and Windows XP and it works ok.

What exactly is happening? DH (pc expert) was asking fairly obvious questions that I won't ask as I know you are fairly expert yourself, but if you want to compare settings, fire away.

Sorry I can't be of any help right now. I've got Jane's program ....but I can't get to it as it's on my home laptop and at the moment the laptop won't start! I'm working off my work laptop right now and I just checked it and surprisingly it has XP......okay, so it's 6:30 in the morning, I didn't get much sleep and I haven't had my coffee yet......what can I say........I'm pretty sure I'm running both XP and Jane's program but can't swear to it.

Mags, that would be really helpful! It's all right to make patterns with, but when I want to print the chart it says there's a GDI failure and asks whether it's OK to go on. If I click yes I can still use the program but it doesn't print, and if I click no it just shuts the program down.
If your DH can make anything of this I'd be very grateful -- hours of Googling haven't got me any nearer to a solution :-(

DH's first thought was to reinstall the printer driver. Have you tried this ?

XP seemed to recognise my printer without having to do so, so I didn't install any drivers for my physical printer; the PDF printer I use is a virtual one, and that was newly installed with all the drivers. But I could certainly try that, thanks!

Mags, give your DH a hug, some :cake: :cake: :cake: :choc: :choc: :choc: and a huge bouquet of tulips from me -- IT WORKED!!!!!

Thank you so much for helping out -- I've got so used to this program I don't really want to start with another (not to mention that what I save on a neww program I can spend on stash :-)). But I will make sure I save all my charts as PDFs as well, so they're not dependent on the cross stitch program to be usable!

Thanks again :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: !

:applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce: Mags, and Mags' hubby!
Mabel, so glad it has been sorted out!
Can I have a question? How do you save your charts in a pdf file? Is it the cross stitch program that allows you to do it?

No, it's what they call a virtual printer driver. I use a program called PDF Redirect which has a freeware version. You install the program and it adds a printer to your computer, except that when you press CTRL+P and choose that printer, it doesn't produce a paper version but a PF. I found it very useful for producing handouts for my students which they could download from my website, as it meant that they could print them but not alter them.
For the charts, I simply choose Print in my cross stitch program, then choose the PDF printer and voilá :-)

That's exactly why I was asking. I will ask hubby to look into this for me. Thank you.

Agi, we have got Cute pdf which works as Mabels does. You can save stuff as pdf, but you can't edit them. Free dowload available here:

Mabel, glad that sorted, I asked DH if he wanted to reply anything but he said "I'm only DH, but I may become dear H" (as in not cheap)
