Heirloom pieces from the Ukraine

Post by agi »

I had my birthday two weeks ago. My boyfriend was apologising profoundly, saying he bought me some present but it had not arrived in time. Then he got sick and could not pick up the parcel from the post office. So finally today I received my present. He bought this for me on Ebay.

Maybe some of you know that I come from a village in Hungary where there is an ethnic minority: Ruthenians. They came from the Ukraine around the 17th century if I remember well, they are a Slavic group. So Stephen found some old Ukrainian embrodery online and bought it for me. Some of them are obviously Jewish. They are from between the two world wars. They are so beautiful - although not in very good shape, very dirty. I need to ask in the museum if it is possible to clean them.

Here are some photos, just the first quick ones with some details as well. Will write about them on my blog later. I am so happy :D

Oh Agi they are AWESOME and how fantastic that they represent your ethnic/family origins. He did an amazing job finding these for you. I do hope he is well again too.

The first one is so elegant and dainty and I really love the last 2 as well. How amazing to see the hardanger work too from all that time ago.

Thank you so much for sharing. :whoop: :whoop: :whoop:

What an interesting selection of pieces. And that monogram...! different shaped crowns were for different levels of royalty (queen, duchess, countess and so on). I'll see what I can dig up. After all, who is A the third? I'd head to the museum, too. You might also see if you can contact the likes of the V & A in London for added information.

Well done that lad!

Stephen thinks the monogram is Alexander III, the Russian zar. That piece is a bag of some kind.

Interesting. Alexander III reigned from 1881–94, and if the bag does relate to his reign, that narrows the dates down. It probably also means that there are other items like it in museums. Wonder where it really came from... you don't get monogrammed bags from royalty every day! :thinks:

Again, Stephen said it might be something used in the military... not sure whether this is just his speculations or there was something in the description o the items on e-bay. Will ask for more details.
