I thought you'd find the gallery at the Sarah Swett site interesting on this account. And it is possible to take small plunges. Yesterday, when it was too hot to continue taming the garden, I wandered into the freebie section of Weaving Today (American, obviously, with a name like that). They had tucked into a package of articles one on weaving postcards with a needle and used pearl 5 thread for warp and weft. That seemed much more familiar!richardandtracy wrote: I am getting closer & closer to taking a small plunge.

Re: Serinde lives up to her name
it is fun... so I found time to distort a few more wefts... My next goal is to try to do something with round shapes. Not sure how easy that will be given that interlocking wefts is a bit tricky when entire cakes of wool are needing to be manoeuvred rather than bobbins or butterflies of weft. Of course, I could cut a length... We'll see, won't we.

Thanks, everyone. It really is fun to weave. And yesterday I had a revelation. Honestly, sometimes I think I'm even thicker than I know I am.
Weavers go on about being able to weave with anything, like plastic bags, and then get all snooty (well, some do) if you aren't using the "right stuff" -- there's a big thing about hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-anything at the moment. Which I support. All extremely useful crafts. And there are times when only worsted wools (for example) will do the job, that's absolutely true. But I'm not going to use expensive stuff while I learn, am I? Anyway, there are some really (inexpensive) zingy acrylic chunky yarns out there just right for experimentation... So, my revelation. I was reading something weavy online where the person "discovered" tapestry wool. You know, comes in skeins made by, oh, Anchor, the stuff we have all used? Got it from a charity shop! Lots of colours! And you could weave with it and it looked good! Who knew! Fancy that! At the top of this thread was a learning piece I started and then abandoned because all I had to use was... tapestry wool. HA! I should listen to my instincts, because all I really need to do is wind the skeins and hanks into useful centre-pull balls. And it has lots of colours and isn't hard to get.
Why do we make something difficult out of something a lot simpler?

And here it is. Actually slightly shorter than I originally had in mind (12" x 18"), but it was in the way on my work table! Not the best selvedge edge in the world, and I was trying to run before I was walking (all those eccentric wefts!), but not bad for a first try, I don't think.
Re: Serinde lives up to her name update 26August
Not bad??? I think it's a fantastic piece, especially for a first try! I know how hard weaving can be when you are trying to put colors and designs into the weaving and I love this. When are you starting your next one and don't forget to give us lots and lots of pictures!Serinde wrote: not bad for a first try, I don't think.

Well! It's been a while, but thought you'd like to see the baby blanket in progress. It will be 24x33 inches, and has been made with a super chunky yarn, Hayfield Ripple in colour called Hollybush. (I liked Misty better, but couldn't get 6 balls!) The warp thread is the same yarn, in "Fleecy" colour way. I know the pic imported turned 90º for some reason, but it probably gives you a better idea of what it really looks like. The pink threads are to show every 8 passes, which is about an inch. Obviously, it's too compact at the moment, but a certain amount of wrestling later on will (should!) do the trick.

I love your weaving!!!! I wish I had the space, the time, and the motivation to join you, but instead I will just love seeing your updates.

Re: Serinde lives up to her name update 7August17
Peg weaving is really very fast -- and forgiving. I can do an entire ball of wool, 87 yards in this case which is about 6 inches -- easily in a couple of hours. This little blanket is just tabby weaving (back and forth and back and forth), without any of the elements that would make it more challenging. It self-stripes, so the only challenge is to make sure that the ball cakes are starting roughly at the right place -- the same way you would if you were stitching with variegated threads. I listen to a lot of music... pity the weather isn't cooperating. It's actually and I should be out in the garden, so I'm not getting along quite so quickly with it.

That is awesome! And I think I know that tabby weaving. That is what one does with single color. You just throw the shuttle in, pull it out and hit with that big item. And then you push the shuttle from the other end, pull it out from the other and hit again. I know it sounds odd, but anyone who has done weaving knows what I am talking about.
