Tutorial—How I finish a Christmas Stocking

Post by Roland »

I’m not very good at teaching, but since I was asked, I’ll try.

I start with my cross stitched picture, a white (or off white) piece of cotton, and the fuzzy material for the back…fuzzy like Sant’s suit.

Image

I use a seamstress chalk to outline the shape of the stocking. This is on the back of the pattern.

Image

Next, I pin the cotton to the back of the picture, after ironing both. Fold and pin the top hem and sew by hand. The red fuzzy material I also fold and hem, but I use my machine for it.

Image

This picture is not quite correct. The red fuzzy should be facing the front of the cross stitch picture because it needs to be sewn inside out.

Image

When the material is put together, I use the chalk mark on back of pattern picture to trace onto the cotton, so I have something to follow while sewing.

Image

I then use these instructions from a Dimensions kit to make the braid for hanging.

And…ta da

That is pretty much how I do my stockings. Now and then I've sewn piping around the stocking, but it makes the process longer and (for me) more difficult. Thanks for sharing.

I was using cording until the pandemic hit and I couldn’t get any. So, I tried this and it’s faster, easier, and I actually like the look better.

Thanks so much for your tutorial. Yes I agree it is a clean look without the piping. I have some plum velvet from Laura Ashley stashed away that will be just the ticket for the backing. Making the bit of braid hanging is great too since it gives us more colour choices!!
