The raised stem stitch looks wonderful!

I had a look at Mary Corbett's video tutorial for it, and I have a question: when she's done one "journey" so goes down the fabric, then comes up at the bottom again. Bit like the Portuguese border in SotW, I suppose you can do that if the distance isn't too big, but what if you are covering a large (long) area? Do you fasten off at the top every time?

In the case of the wheel, did you just go round and round, "jumping" over the gaps?

Well, Mabel, the short answer is yes. In a practice piece, I established that it was possible to do a full circle just by going round and round. So, rather than start and stop, I did the big 3/4 circle. Each time I got to the end, I began a new thread at the start. So not too much fastening on and off. The back looks terrible. As far as the spokes are concerned, I had to do it correctly, so every time I reached the end, I turned the piece over and wove the thread back underneath the "scaffolding", so there would be no chance of accidentally catching the wool and breaking it. Still, it didn't take long at all.

What Serinde learned: when you start the scaffold, make sure your first and final stitches are rather closer to the ends than you might think necessary. After all, you just go over them, the thread doesn't loop around them. Makes it easier to start and stop.

The panel is back with me once more, and I have a LOT to do in the next week. But I thought you might like so see what progress has been made.

First, the steam condensers in their watery bath:

And here's Mr Thomas Telford:

And last, but not least, the wig is finished. I love the way it turns into an undershot waterwheel -- the artist is... artistic! And more wheels. The working thread is for rivets. (Naturally.) I've finished one on the far left.

Thanks for the info about the raised stem stitch, Serinde. The wig looks beautiful, so textured! What stitch are you using for the rivets?

Good question. It's sort of satin stitch, outlined in black floss. I did think about using a French knot with three strands of wool (as others have done) but my French knots aren't up to the job. In any case, I guess we are trying to suggest the smoothness of machine-made items, and suggest the new world being opened up. Too much philosophy for six strands of grey floss!!

It's amazing to see it growing so quickly. Will definitely have to plan a side trip into Scotland to see the whole tapestry once it's complete :applesauce:

This is amazing and it's the first time I've seen the thread. I've been far too intermittent the last few months and missed all sorts!

Your stitching is beautiful and this is really an awesome project to be involved in. The final complete tapestry will be stunning.
