Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 2nd set of numbers is up!
I didn't get a chance to peek yesterday but when I peeked today I didn't get any yesterday. Today, however, saw Archimedes saving me from have 0 again. So, I'm at 1/10.

At 2/10 with Thursday's draw. I'd heard of Archimedes & the gold & the tub etc, but never really understood what it was all about - Eureka!! now I get it!

Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 2nd set of numbers is up!
Haha, great to hear that you enjoy this =)
When I drew Leibniz I forgot to mention that there are also cookies named after him They are delicious
So here are todays numbers (I know, I am late... )
9) Leonardo Fibonacci
Leonardo Fibonacci was born around 1180 in Pisa. He is normally called Leonardo da Pisa, but it came down to Fibonacci. He was a mathematician.
I guess most of you know the Fibonacci numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13....
You start with the numbers 0 and 1 and then you add the two numbers to create the next one. You always add two following numbers to create the next one =) I think nearly everyone came across this sequence once =)
You can create a lot of numbers this way and if you build the quotient of two following numbers you will approach the golden ration =)
21) Emmy Noether
Amelie Emmy Noether was born in 1882 in Erlangen, Germany and was a mathematician and physicist.
One reason I picked her is that I wanted a few women in the list, they are not so easy to find
She had to fight a lot of laws against women in universities. From 1908 on it was not allowed for a woman to become a tenured university professor, but two famous mathematicians (Hilbert and Klein) from the university of Göttingen (something like the mathematical capital of Germany back then) encouraged Emmy to try and become a private docent because she did a lot of revolutionary work in algebra and ring-theory.
There was a hot debate about this. On the contra site it was asked, what soldiers were to think if they returned from war just to learn at the feet of a woman.
On the pro site, the university is "not a bath house" so the sex shouldn't matter.
After the first World War the rights of women were expanded, so Noether got her habilitation after all, but it was not until 1923 that she actually got payed for teaching at university.
In 1933 she lost her right to teach at university as a result of a new law in the Nazi regime, so she emigrated to the US where she lived for the last two years of her life.
I think Emmy Noether is a brilliant example on women who were oppressed by the system, but did brilliant work.

Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 3rd set of numbers is up!
I'm at 2/10. I probably heard of the Fibonacci Sequence in school, but don't really remember it. Where I remember it from is the Da Vinci Code. I'm glad I chose him lol.

2 more today bringing me to 5/10.
Very cool story about Emmy Noether! I'd not heard of her before, but women like her really paved the way for women in math and science fields. When I was in college I got the chance to meet the first woman to graduate from my school's mechanical engineering school. She was one neat lady, but I can't seem to recall her name at the moment.
