Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 3rd set of numbers is up!
Great stories today, but the random number function in Excel had not chosen them for my Bingo selections. I'm still at 3/10. Theresa

Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 3rd set of numbers is up!
So, today I am up early and will be on the go for the whole day. So I will put up todays numbers now =)
25) Adam Riese
Adam Riese was born in 1492 or 1493 in Staffelstein, Germany. He is normally called Adam Ries, but many call him "Riese".
He didn't do so much for mathematics, but for the people in Germany.
On the one hand he made using the south asian number system popular. Before that, roman numbers where used, which made calculating a bit of a chaos, so moving towards a decimal system like we use today made it all a bit easier.
But even more important was, that his books on calculating where written in German, not in Latin, so the common people could read them and learn about calculating.
He even published a book especially for children and a book for the common people to use in their daily life, so there were not played false when they bought bread or something like that.
Just as Martin Luther translated the bible into German, so everyone could read it, Adam Ries made his books available to everyone =)
In Germany you can say, that he actually taught the people to calculate. You often use the expression "due to Adam Riese" when you want to emphasize that what you calculated is correct. For example "Due to Adam Riese, 2 and 2 make 4".
18) Bernhard Riemann
Bernhard Riemann was bron in 1826 in Breselenz , Germany. He is one of the greatest mathematicians and I think a lot of people came across him at school without knowing it.
He did a lot of work in analysis, but most know is the Riemann-integral. If you came across and integral in school, you can be sure it was the Riemann-integral, but you just call it an integral because it's THE integral
His works made up the way for Einsteins Theory of relativity =)
He also created another mathematical problem which is unsolved until today, but he mentioned that he gave up on proofing it after a few tries because it was not that essential for his work.
It was put on the list of the Millennium Prize Problems. There are currently 7 problems on the list and only one has been solved. If you can proof one of those, you get $1,000,000
Imagine how much stash THAT would mean

Re: Mathematicians-Bingo - 4th set of numbers is up!
So, here are todays numbers. I will post tomorrows numbers tomorrow evening. With university and other stuff, I don't have the time to do this earlier during the week
So, it's G(r)eek time =)
7) Euclid
Euclid was born in 360 b.c., perhaps in Athens and was a Greek mathematician.
He published a fundamental work called "The Elements", which is the basic of geometry (it's on my "must have and read"-list). He was once asked by a king if there was a shorter road than learning by his "Elements", but Euclid simply said, that there is "No royal road to geometry".
Euclid uses compass and straightedge constructions, which means you have a compass and a ruler (no markings!) to construct everything. You can actually calculate with those two things by drawing lines and circles.
Euclid described in his books (there were 13) how to construct platonic solids that way.
Those are for example tetrahedron or cubes.
I think that's quite interesting. I always drew cubes with a marked ruler or by measuring the angle or using the squares on the paper. But there is actually a way to to that without all of that.
24) Aristotle
Aristotle was born in 384 b.c. in Stagira, Chalkidiki peninsula . He was mostly a philosopher. He learned from Plato and taught Alexander the Great.
He studied logic and laid a basis for logic.
Due to him "all science is either practical, poetical or theoretical". Theoretical science includes mathematics and physics, practical science means politics and poetical science is the study of fine art and poetry.
By studying him, you can see how close the borders between science and philosophy are. His "natural philosophy" is about the phenomena in nature, you would put this to biology or physics or natural science.
He did a lot of scientific observations, but in his publications are some fatal errors.
In his book "History on Animals" he actually claimed, that human males have more teeth than females
He also believed in a fifth element called aether.
All other elements had qualities (water is cold and wet, fire is hot and dry, earth is cold and dry, air is hot and wet), but aether had none. He believed, that aether created the heavenly spheres and the the planets. Aether can not change (except changing it's place), while due to Aristotle all other elements where able to change and transform into each other, which made it everlasting.
It has the power to fill lifeless things with life,
Aether theory is quite interesting, it has something supernatural about it.
There is also a modern aether theory, which does not really have something in common with the classical aether theory .
So, it's G(r)eek time =)
