The colour limitations were imposed relatively recently - I think people went rather overboard with the number of colours they incorporated and it can obscure the clarity of design and stitches if it's a positive riot of colours I suppose.

As for the SAL, as always there are absolutely no deadlines..... :-)

Another class coming up on Saturday, and I needed to get some stitches into the actual piece of work! But first (as usual) some sampling, this time among other things for the ball of wool that entangles the cat. It's padded satin stitch, and I'm please with how it worked out (the thread coming off it to go round the cat will be couched). Now I just need to get it to look exactly like that on the real piece :-)

On the Certificate piece itself I managed to finish the big tulip     - here is a close-up, and a pic of the whole thing as it is now. More detail on FoF as usual.

Well! I say, Mabel, that's pretty special.

Regarding the cat's ball of wool, are you allowed to have the strand that's being pulled by the stretching cat to be slightly out of alignment? On the other hand, I do see that fidelity to nature isn't what this piece is actually about! :kitty:

No, Jacobean crewelwork is not renowned for its pictorial accuracy

WOW! This is very special indeed. :whoop:

I love the close - ups of the work and we can see how the colours blend into each other.

I hope you feel a great sense of pride and achievement each time you work on this.

That ball of wool looks just like the wrap of a ball, can't wait to see it wrapped around the cat - speaking of which does he/she have a name?

Well done Mabel, it is amazing to think of how many hours of work have gone into this very special project.

The cat is a portrait of our Lexi in one of her more elegant poses :-) (She has just come in absolutely soaked and is trying to sit on my lap...)

Of course she is. She's wet and therefore it is wrong that you are not, and in you becoming wet, she gets dryer. Makes sense to a cat.

While sampling the couched thread of wool that goes around the cat on my RSN Cerificate piece DH pointed out that the line between her tum and the rest of her fur was much too stark (he demonstrated this by pointing out this line - or lack of it - on our real-life model, which was on my lap at the time). So I've added a few stitches to make the line a bit more blurred.

This is a fairly rough-and-ready sample, and I had to work some of the stitches underneath the couching which of course won't happen on the real piece, but it will do as an illustration :-) . The difference isn't very big but I think it will be noticeable in the overall look.

I can see the difference between the first and second picture and it does look more subtle.

The couched thread of the blue yarn is perfect...I always have problems with couching, getting the couched stitches small and even enough!

I can see the difference too, and whilst it is subtle it does make such a difference to the overall look of the line between Lexi's tummy and the rest of her fur. (we could do with a magnifying glass smilie).

Your couching looks perfect, so neat.

The cat's back looks so real, i can't believe this likeness can be achieved with the help of a needle and some thread! Very well done, M :applesauce: abel.

It's so beautifully stitched and your husband has a good eye - I definitely think your change to the fur will make a difference. :applesauce: :applesauce:

It's been three weeks since my latest class, so an update is overdue. It's slow going and progress is piecemeal, but it's getting there :-)
The project is in hibernation now until next year, as I'm concentrating more on the SAL, but I'm looking forward to getting started on the snail!

The pics show the Pekinese stitch hillock and the satin stitch brick in close-up, and an overview of the whole tree as it looks at the moment.
(More details on FoF as usual)
