Because they are paired up (even numbers) if someone is at the pointy end of the V then then there will be one spare at the back

Is it something horrible and complex like -they start in a straight line, all together, then spread out behind the leader,keeping the alternate formation,that way if they go back to a straight line no birds would collide.

The players failed to answer the first riddle until the end of the day! I posted the riddle at 9:20 am and we didn't have a correct answer until 5:08 pm. I'm listing it according to the time's on the post's. The second riddle is not posted until the first is answered!
