Favorite Carols

Post by Jilly »

We had some wonderful carol singers in the Town today, so I was wondering which carols are your favorites, I love most of them, but for pure goosebumpy pleasure I would have to say

In The Bleak Mid Winter
Silent Night
Once In Royal David's City
Good King Wenceslas
Gaudete, sung by Steeleye Span

They sung Bleak mid winter when I was up in the stock room on my own, it carried through the window a treat, so I had some me time away from the mayhem on the shop floor. perfect :D

O Holy Night for a traditional one

Fairy Tale of New York by Pogues and the late Kirsty McColl and
Merry Christmas by the Waitresses for my more modern ones!

Bleak midwinter eh? Two years ago we lived in a tiny village that never saw a snow plough or a gritter. It started snowing on Boxing Day. We were snowed in until New Years Eve. It was one of the most relaxing Christmas breaks we ever had. Watched lots of DVDs, did loads of stitching, it was great! :D :D :D
A stitch in time is my idea of a perfect day!

My all time favorite has to be "O Holy Night", and my favorite rendition is by Celine Dion! When ever I play it, I get a lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye!

I love 'In the Bleak Midwinter' too - definitely my favourite.

My favourite modern Christmas song is also 'Fairy Tale of New York', Jilly. Saw it on TV yesterday.

My son is still snowboarding in Whistler, so is relishing all the snow. Stay warm and cosy, Mauverne.

I love " I believe in Father Christmas"... For Traditional, I've always loved "Silent Night"...

My fav non-tradional song is a tie between two... "Hey Santa" by Carrie & Wendy Wilson, and SheDaisy's "Tinseltown".

Also of note is SheDaisy's "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"... Easily the best rendition of this song that I've ever heard.

Oh oh, and N'Sync's "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays"... I love that one.

I also have 18 different christmas songs sung in Japanese...

What can I say... I've always loved Christmas music!

Next week, out comes the 'Huddersfield Choral Society' Christmas Album :D

The trouble is that some of the worst songs ever have been released at Christmas time, so we are doomed to hear them for ever

Ok, I have just remembered the tackiest and funniest Christmas song I like, I don't know why, everyone thinks it's terrible but it just hits my funnybone.

"Grandma got run over by a Reindeer"

And they even made it into a cartoon. Too funny.

Well, my top favourites, in no particular order:
Angleus ad virginem (which is a medieval carol)
Gabriel's message (an old Basque noel with 19th century words)
Good King Wenceslas
In dulci jubilo
Es ist ein Ros entsprungen which is "Low, how a Rose e'er blooming" (because I love Praetorius)

Good question I LOVE Christmas Carols!!!

My #1 would have to be "The Little Drummer Boy" but only if they say Jesus name properly

#2 Silver Bells
#3 Winter Wonderland
#4 All the rest including the silly ones like "My Sombereo is too big", "I'm getting Nut'in for Christmas" and an all time favorite, "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas"

I have never heard some of the ones you all are talking about.

The silly ones sound wonderful, Rose. I've never heard of them. Can you sing a couple for us, please?

Serinde - you've made me find out more about your carols. I'm afraid I don't know anything about medieval music - medieval literature, yes - so I've learned something today! :)

If anyone's looking for some fun songs, check out Metro's Eleven days from Christmas, and Let is Snow!

Metro is a polish gentleman from the old country and his Eleven days from Christmas includes 5 Golden Rings... Of Kubasa!

It's aweseome!!!
