Talking of eyes following you around the room, when I was young my parents had a picture of the Laughing Cavalier, his eyes followed me around, he scared me so much I gouged them out of the picture
For some reason I did not get told off too much, maybe the hated him too

I'm assuming this was not the original 17th century Dutch master that you so wantonly destroyed ?

The fact that I am alive, and telling the tale to you, leads me to believe it may not have been the real thing

Re: using beads instead of french knots
Glad to hear it Jilly!
But to get back to the original question here's an example where I used a bead for a bird's eye (and for the berries as well):

I do loike french knots, but looking at that, you can see how beads can add to a design, bringing it a bit more to life even.

Very nice Mabel. The little birdie is sweet.
As for eyes following you around Jilly that was rather violent. Tisk Tisk but I do understand. My son is one of those odd people who sleeps with his eyes open. Not totally but about half mast. When he is sleeping like this and you go into his room his eyes will follow you around. It is a bit creepy but I have learned to ignore it.

Re: using beads instead of french knots
I have used red seed beads very successfully for holly berries. Very subtle against dark green threads. Just that hint of a sparkle that you really need at (shhhh) Christmas.
