Love Cairee's list of Christmas songs that did NOT make our list of 30 ... and especially happy to see Mele Kalikimaka. That's Merry Christmas in Hawaiian: MEH-lay Kah-LEE-kee-MAH-kah. Want to say Happy New Year in Hawaiian? Hau'oli Makahiki Hou, pronounced How-OH-lee Mah-kah-HEE-kee Ho. --Aloha! Carol in Honolulu

And we're off ... here are the first two numbers for Christmas carol Bingo:

DAY 1

6. Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

21. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer

6. Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire is the popular name for The Christmas Song, written in 1944 by Mel Torme and Bob Wells. Hot weather prompted Wells to write down wintertime thoughts, which he and Torme turned into lyrics and melody in just 40 minutes. Nat King Cole's rendition is in the Grammy Hall of Fame (1974).

21. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer was written by Johnny Marks in 1939 based on a story by his brother-in-law, Robert L. May. The song became a hit in 1949 when recorded by Gene Autry. It ranks second in sales only to Bing Crosby's White Christmas.

Good to hear from wwdiva, rcperryls, kiwirach, cairee and Louise1262 about Day 1's picks. Hope these new ones meet with your approval!

Day 2

26.
The Little Drummer Boy

28. We Three Kings

26. American classical composer Katherine Kennicott Davis wrote The Little Drummer Boy in 1941. Originally titled Carol of the Drum, it was based on a 12th-century Czech carol that had also been made into an opera in 1902.

28. While the Reverend John Henry Hopkins Jr. was music director at a New York City seminary in the mid-1800s, he wrote both music and lyrics of We Three Kings for a holiday pageant for the students.

Aloha ... hope these two carols are just what you're looking for! There's an especially interesting history for #20. (I'm posting early because I won't be home most of tomorrow).

Day 3

20. O Holy Night

10. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

20. O Holy Night has a fascinating history as a beloved Christmas carol that was eventually denounced for a time by the French Catholic church. The carol also brought about a temporary truce on Christmas Eve during the Franco-Prussian War, and some of the stanzas became inspiration for US abolitionists. I tried to condense major details of this history but couldn't do them justice, so you may want to check this site:

http://www.Beliefnet.com/entertainment/ ... Holy-Night" target="_blank

10. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, a traditional English Christmas carol, was published in 1833 but was known to exist about 1760. It is mentioned in 1843 in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," when Scrooge brandishes a ruler to chase away the person singing that song. ... The original title used the word You, not Ye, and the change may have been to make the carol sound older.
