Halloween Treat Bag (LastingAllure design) - Finished 11 Oct

Post by msufly »

I saw Shannon's (aka LastingAllure on the forum) Halloween alphabet designs in the Nov 2014 issue of WOCS and decided to use it to create a trick-or-treating bag for my daughter. She's only 2 so she may not get much use out of it this year but I hope she loves it and uses it in her years to come. I bought the canvas tote bag and the 14 ct Charles Craft waste canvas at Hobby Lobby. This is my first time using waste canvas and I can already tell that all my X's won't be perfectly straight/even so the bag will certainly have personality! Here's the model picture from the magazine:

At first, I thought I'd stitch the word "Candy" but then I changed my mind to stitch "Treats" since that's the more correct word for a trick-or-treat bag! Of course, once I took the picture, I see that while I thought I started the E in Treat from the center, I'm 5 holes left of where I should be because I mixed up which grid line I was focused on...oh well. Here's my progress today - tacking on the waste canvas and stitching one-handed & pushing the needle through the thick canvas tote bag:

Looking awesome!! :whoop:

Just a suggestion if you're 5 stitches off you could always add one of the small pumpkins to the end and maybe a star above it.

Can't wait to see more done on it! :)

Great idea! I should be doing something like this too, and it's a great design to use. Good luck with the waste canvas, it looks great already! :applesauce:

I'm now halfway done with the "Treats" bag! It takes some effort to stitch on the canvas bag and I've stuck my finger with the needle more times than I care to count trying to poke the needle through the fabric. But I can't wait to finish it and strip off the waste canvas to see the final product!

My LNS didn't have the 054F Kreinik in #4 braid so I improvised and used 053F in blending filament and tweeded it with DMC 3889 to get similar in color to the 054F while it still glows in the dark. It's my first time using Kreinik and it's not fun! Using short pieces but it still likes to be a pain to deal with.

That looks wonderful. :applesauce: :applesauce:

When I work with canvas I always use a leather thimble I find that to be absolutely necessary. I finally found a good one at my LNS that fits well and is not to bulky.

The stitching part of the Treats bag is complete...now for the tedious task of removing the waste canvas. I have to remind myself to have patience because I can loosen stitches if I pull to hard. Cutting out any extra bits I can seems to help. Second pic is a sneak peak of what it'll look like. Five more letters to go.
