Origins of a sampler

Post by westrnfan »

My wife had a sampler chart with an European language " friesche merklap uit 1726 stijvol antien om nu te borduren". I think it was given to her by a group of ladies from Denmark who visited her in Tennessee to see her completed works. I wounder the country of origin? It can be seen at lovedtostitch.com under miscellaneous collections.
Thanks

Dokkum is a town in Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. The Dutch sentence "friesche merklap uit 1726 stijvol antiek [not "antien"] om nu te borduren" means "Frisian sampler from 1726, a stylish antique to embroider today/now".

How interesting that something stitched so long ago is still being seen. I know I have items my grandmother stitched back in the 1940's and still in great condition. Wonder how long our stitching will last? :)

Sally, could you kindly show us your grandmother's stitchings? Because I was not wise enough to preserve my granny's ones. She just gave them away/left behind when moving.

I hope a century or more.
Have evidence that it can last that long, from my Great Aunt's work, done around 1912.

Beautiful piece of stitching from your aunt, Richard! I love looking at pieces done so many years ago. Definitely something to be cherished.

Beautiful, and does not look like "granny's" stitching. Thank you for sharing.

Gorgeous. I love the English rose in the back there!
