Took two youngest grandkids to the zoo. They had university students set up with touch tables. The 4 year old was quite taken with one of the tables, asking loads of questions about the bird beaks and skulls. Then the guy shows him a penguin wing. The guy is telling him stuff about it and asks if he has any questions:

Why doesn’t the penguin need his wing anymore?

The guy looks at me with panic in his eye. I shrugged and said he lives on a farm, just tell him.

He doesn’t need it any more because he died.

How did he die?

I don’t know.

Did you kill him?

LOL I expected DGS to start talking about daddy killing ducks and turkeys. (Ducks were his own, and he got tickets to hunt two turkeys.)

This made me smile. Children are very literal -- one of their saving graces -- and the world is, in any case, inexplicable to a very young child (and many adults). Straight talking, and only including details that are (a) relevant and (b) age appropriate generally is a good idea. But how wonderful that DGS was clearly engaged.

Made me smile too :D This is such a wonderful age. Children are so wonderfully curious about the world and have not yet learned what are “appropriate or inappropriate “questions. They ask the questions they want they want the answers to.

And they say what they think, not wanting to be rude but not yet having learnt "tact" - visiting a friend here yesterday her very bright 7-year-old asked (because we'd been talking about the age of the car we'd come in, which dates from 1933) how old we were. DH replied that he was 69, and I said I was 53, and he looked at us wide-eyed and exclaimed "That's like grandma and grandpa ages!!

It's so refreshing to hear the honesty and innocence in these questions and statements. Way too soon do they learn to "bite their tongues".
