I was always proud of my stitching without any gridding. But it is advisable never to say never. Janlynn made me "grid" with the thread just showing the tens of squares horisontally at the bottom and vertically on the left of the picture-to-be. When it was coming to panic, I could always check if I was in the right place. It was enough, as I never worked with books of charts. If I start in the centre, I just mark the central square with a red or bright green thread, and start from it. My problem with poor squirrels was due to my not gridding, I am afraid. But the very thought of gridding makes me tired. As one of my ex-pupils says, "We are not looking for easy ways. We create difficulties and then struggle against them". And no, I have not gridded anything after Janlynn's "Windows".

It struck me there must be a cross stitch forum where ideas were exchanged & eventually stumbled in here.
And a good job it was too! :D

I enjoyed reading about your journey into Cross Stitching, Richard, most interesting...

It does prove to be true.
I actually, weirdly enjoy gridding with a solid thread called Gutermann Sulky thread. I find it mindlessly relaxing. It certainly prevents a lot of frogging in my case, especially at the end of a long session of stitching when I start getting tired.
The water soluble ink pens are good too but the thread is my favourite method.
I am glad that you can see some value in gridding, Lyudmila. :D

I made a few cards between projects. Mainly because the cards shops were still shut.
It is a good feeling to have some quick finishes!

Cards are a problem! My godson's birthday is this week, and I have NOTHING that will suit and almost nowhere is open for me to find a good card. :(
