Having a :coffee: . My DH, bless him, is trying to convince me that $6000+ for a 2-year course on 17th-century stitched box-making is worth it. Or in any way affordable unless we win the Euro Millions tomorrow. (Quite apart from the fact that all my UFOs would haunt me forever due to neglect.)

Guess I'll also have a piece of :cake:.

:thinks: The government keeps on about retraining post Covid. Doing a 2 year training course on 17th-century stitched box-making sounds to me like an important skill that we need to invest in. Have you considered trying to see if there is any grants to support your course attendance?

When I did my PhD, 12 years ago, we had lots of older student who had taken early retirement coming back and taking out their student loans to do a degree in something they fancied. The University thought this was great as they gained extra funded students. The Students thought this was great as for three years they could draw down on a student loan, pay for their fees (and I suspect other costs  ) with the knowledge they would never work again so would never have to pay back the student loan.

Back in my youth (and having done a Masters myself), I "prepared the manuscript" (i.e. typed up) a PhD for a friend's father. I kept telling him his sources were incomplete (in fact, they were absolute unbelievable rubbish), and I questioned whether his supervisor had actually laid eyes on it (I'm sure he hadn't). The candidate ignored me. I told my friend it was going to end unhappily. Oh, boy, and it did ever, although the university didn't seem to mind (they got their money).

I'm too old to get a grant in Scotland for education, and quite rightly. Let the young people have the wherewithal to study at all levels and courses. Don't suppose I'd get far crowdfunding...

The mature students were much appreciated by both the youngsters and the staff. They added a deeper level of comprehension and it was surprising how the all of the students in their classes did much better than the classes that did not have a mature student in their mist

It's why I'm doing the Certificate and not the Degree  - however creative our reasoning, some expenses are impossible to justify. Unless, of course, you do win the lottery.... (or find a kind patron)

Alas, Mabel. Both are unlikely. But that leaves it for someone else to enjoy.

That's really good news Wendy.
Having decided to see if not having any alcohol helps my occasional slight heart arrhythmia as it does for a colleague, I will raise a mug of tea instead.

As someone who merely has a degree (and is the only one in our house without a Masters), I do feel as if I am very much the junior in the education stakes both here & at home.
Tracy took her Masters using the England only student loan scheme. On experience to date, her Master's has had a negative effect on her income prospects - it made the Library manager who left end of September ensure that Tracy never got involved in any part of her work that was related to her Masters of Distance Learning & Online education. Which meant that in the last 18 months Tracy was in effect demoted so she wasn't in a post where anything related to that was required. However, that vindictive swine is now inflicting herself on the poor denizens of a library in a Liverpool University (not sure which myself) and the new manager has talked to Tracy more in 2 weeks than the previous one did in 3 years.

Hope that's decaf tea, Richard, or you might as well enjoy the champers.

See, another good thing that's happened in the RichardandTracy household. Long may it continue, and Tracy is able to actually use her degree.

Do herbal teas count? I often have a cup of chamomile and vanilla tea at night. Especially in the winter.

Thankyou everyone...the Elves have just finished clearing up the streamers of 'silly string' and paper cups. The last of the biscuit and cake crumbs swept away.
I noticed that there were a few Pumpkin Lanterns still in the tree house after Halloween, but they added to festive party air :partyhat: :partyhat: :rainbow: :mexicanwave: :mexicanwave:

New box of crockery, for the smashing of, in the vestibule of the sound-proof room. Christmas can be... difficult...

Also the little tiny lights have been put up outside the French doors.
