Which of the two :-) ? They'll both look quite different in the final piece, and more recognisably tulipy, I hope.

Both! I presume you are trying out stitches/combinations of stitches before you make a decision. Who knew canvas work could be so exciting.?

That, and threads - which have the right weight, which do I have in the right colours, which have the right sort of texture... yes, definitely exciting, but terrified of actually putting the first stitch onto the actual canvas!

What you need are TWO pieces of Actual Canvas. Then if you make a 'pigs ear' of one then you can say that it was your 'Practice Start'!

 Wendy - I have several canvases framed up, this hooped one, one on my Millennium frame, and a spare to go on the M frame when this one is full, so no excuse once it comes to the Real Thing

Absolutely! Is this the same feeling you’ve had before starting your other classes? My guess is it is which is natural because it’s new and different. Think back,to,the very first time you had to snip fabric and pull out the threads for your first hardinger piece. That was scary too I’m sure. And look what you turned that into!!!!

Quite right. I'm sure you will design and stitch something utterly and typically Mabel, and therefore interesting and beautiful.

Not really, because I had done a fair bit of both crewelwork and goldwork before so I knew what I was doing :-) ! But your Hardanger example is a good one, and I shall bear that in mind when taking the plunge and starting ont he real canvas, thank you.

Yes, my Canvaswork module is still ongoing, and yes, it is still going slowly and consisting of sampling only (plus a bit of colouring in). Still, I'm having a lot of fun with all sorts of stitches and threads on my sample canvases :-)

Below a few things I've been trying out, as always more detail on FoF

What an intriguing array of beautiful stitches!

It's so interesting to watch your planning process and the stitches and colours you choose.

You know we will be cheering you on when you get started.

The windmill looks like it will be tricky.

The stitches are lovely. The more detailed info on FoF was also very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing how this one progresses.

Still not a stitch on the proper canvas  but I've been doing some detailed charting which I hope will encourage me to take the plunge!

This is soooo interesting. I love how you describe the process you go through. I had no idea canvas work would be so difficult. Then again, I had no idea about anything related to canvas work. I think I imagined it to be similar to needlepoint (I think y'all have a different word for what we call needlepoint?). I am sure once you get those first stitches in and become more confident, it will go smoother than you might be feeling now.
Again, I think about the first time I had to get the fabric for a harbinger design. I think my hand was shaking. I am looking forward to watching your progress. How are the other students progressing, if I may ask?

Oh, each at their own pace - we're all at different stages of the Certficate and Diploma, and every class has a mix of people, so you may meet different people pretty much every time. It's very interesting to see all the different modules on the go, and how other students tackle them!

I really love doing counted canvas and I’m thankful for people like you who do the charting for those of us who just want to do the stitching. :-)

Lexi approves of your efforts!

Your charts look so professional, do they form part of the marking system?

I've booked marked for to read later with a cuppa, so nice to settle down for such interesting reads.

Your skill and patience are endless Mabel, I once charted my son's Birthday sampler ( name and d.o.b. in binary code, in the green of the Matrix films on black fabric) and it nearly broke me, I used graph paper like yours but never again, give me a needle, thread and fabric and I am a happy woman. :D

The charts are really just for my benefit, but they will be handed in with all the rest of the sampling and notes.

I love the idea of that binary sampler, he must have been so pleased with it!

Yes DS was really chuffed with it and it now lives on the wall behind his computer, however being his full name and d.o.b. means I can never post a photo of it for obvious reasons. You'll just have to take my word for it.
